Isilon Monitoring by HP SiteScope using SNMP

Hello All,

We are trying to setup Isilon Monitoring using HP Monitoring tool called HP SiteScope.

SiteScope uses SNMP for monitoring..

We have tried all the steps in setting up monitoring but, everything failed..

IS THERE A WAY TO MONITOR ISILON USING SSH SCRIPTS

OR

DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO SETUP ISILON MONITORING USING HP SITESCOPE

Hi Rahul,

I don't know anything about HP SiteScope so I can't help you there sorry.

How if you want to monitor the performance or alerts on an Isilon cluster programmatically I suggest you take a look at the Isilon API and the SDK that wraps around that.

A good starting place for the Isilon API and SDK is the Isilon SDK Info Hub.   If you want to go to the Isilon SDK directly you can find it at EMC Isilon · GitHub.

Cheers,

Chris

There are a handful of threads on the DellEMC Community forums about Isilon and SNMP.  This one, for example, has a bit of information about the kind of information that can be collected via SNMP.

Years ago, I used HP OpenView, then Nagios to monitor a few Isilon clusters via SNMP, back in the 6.0.x days.  In both cases, I had only a handful of problems importing the MIB, doing an snmpwalk, then collecting performance data into our SNMP environment.  If SiteScope is anything like OpenView, it shouldn't be too difficult.  Are you able to perform an snmpwalk using the Isilon MIB?

While Isilon monitoring via SSH isn't too complicated, you might find Chris' suggestion to use the Isilon API will be much, much easier.

Thanks Karl for your input..

Sitescope personnel asked us to provide MIB file in asn.1 format. But, from Isilon GUI we can only download MIB file in .txt format. Is there anyway to get the MIB file in asn.1 format

They are telling that the Isilon is not responding to SNMP queries which are sent by the SiteScope.

We checked that Port 161 is open and did all other troubleshooting. But, no success..

That's a good question.  In all my years, I've only ever used text-based MIB files.  Nagios, PRTG and other SNMP tools can leverage text MIBs without much issue.  ASN1 is simply the name of the formatting within the MIB.  To the best of my knowledge, there is no "ASN1 fornat".  Google seems to back me up on that one.  Is it possible they need to compile the MIB for their browser?  They might need a few additional MIBs, such as RFC 1213, to compile a full browser.

What happens when you simply do an snmpwalk of the Isilon?  When I snmpwalk it with my read-only SNMP community string and use an IP from one of the SmartPools, I can get data such as the following:

cit-22$ snmpwalk -v 2c -c read-only-comm -Ln -m ISILON-MIB 172.168.120.101

SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.1.1.0 = STRING: "Isilon OneFS C-1 v7.1.1.4 Isilon OneFS v7.1.1.4 A_1_1_2_22(RELEASE) amd64"

SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.1.2.0 = OID: ISILON-MIB::cluster

SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.1.3.0 = Timeticks: 254 days, 9:11:42.18

SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.1.4.0 = STRING:

SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.1.5.0 = STRING: "isilon-cluster-d1"

SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.1.6.0 = STRING: "XXXX"

SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.1.7.0 = INTEGER: 12

SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.1.8.0 = Timeticks: (19) 0:00:00.19

SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.1.9.1.2.1 = OID: SNMPv2-SMI::snmpModules.10.3.1.1

SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.1.9.1.2.2 = OID: SNMPv2-SMI::snmpModules.11.3.1.1

SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.1.9.1.2.3 = OID: SNMPv2-SMI::snmpModules.15.2.1.1

If you can successfully walk the Isilon with the text MIB, it means that SNMP is working succesfully and SNMP is listening for queries.  If you cannot walk the Isilon, you'll want to check your SNMP settings, including your read-only community string, then confirm the service is available and listening.  If you can walk it successfully, make sure your Sitescope team is using the proper community string and is using SNMP v2.  This is important, because only SNMP v2 and v3 is supported on 6.5 in my installation documentation.  It might have changed in the many versions since, but when I try the walk you see above on the same cluster with SNMP v1 on a, it fails.

Hi Karl,

This is what I get from the snmp walk

Isilon-Sac01-1# snmpwalk -v 2c -c I\$ilonpublic -Ln -m ISILON-MIB 10.58.43.12

SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.1.1.0 = STRING: "Isilon OneFS Isilon-Sac01-1 v7.2.0.3 Isilon OneFS v7.2.0.3 B_7_2_0_144(RELEASE) amd64"

SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.1.2.0 = OID: ISILON-MIB::cluster

SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.1.3.0 = Timeticks: (414071176) 47 days, 22:11:51.76

SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.1.4.0 = STRING: "unset@unset.invalid"

SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.1.5.0 = STRING: "Isilon-Sac01-1"

SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.1.6.0 = STRING: "unset"

SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.1.7.0 = INTEGER: 12

SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.1.8.0 = Timeticks: (7) 0:00:00.07

SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.1.9.1.2.1 = OID: SNMPv2-SMI::snmpModules.11.2.3.1.1

SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.1.9.1.2.2 = OID: SNMPv2-SMI::snmpModules.15.2.1.1

SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.1.9.1.2.3 = OID: SNMPv2-SMI::snmpModules.10.3.1.1

Please help me with next troubleshooting steps..

That looks good to me and proves two things:

1) The ISILON text MIB file is valid.  As you can see, you can communicate with the Isilon cluster via SNMP and you're getting valid SNMP modules (note the modules in 2.1.9.1.2.xxx in your output).

2)  Your Sitescope staff need to check if they're doing SNMP v2 or higher, as you can see that your SNMP walk works.

Let us know if that helps!
