opportunistic locking on Isilon and windows 7 clients

Hi

We have some issues with clients using windows 7 and having their home areas on Isilon. The problems is related to excel and word documents being "locked for  editing" by another user or the same user when these files are tried opened. After some investigation it seems to be related to old types of office documents not being very compatible with smb oplocks on Isilon.

We tried to convert the files to the latest version of office, but the problem persists.

I consider turning off oplocks to see if the performance can be improved but i would like to hear out if you guys have similar problems.

i had this issue with one department and it was improperly configured firewall in Symantec antivirus. Are users connecting through firewalls (desktop or corporate) ?

Not entirely sure since i dont experience the issue myself. Lots of users complains about this issue though.

Would it be any benefit at all to turn of oplocks?
