17 not booting, at all

I turned on my 17 this morning, with a keyboard plugged in. It starting 'installing a driver', then when that finished, it went off instantly.

I tried again in a different port, same result.

Now it won't boot at all, not even slightly. I've left it for an hour and tried just turning it on and it still won't.

Hello,

I'm assuming you tried to boot the system without the keyboard plugged in but that didn't change what you see happening?

What operating system are you running?  If Windows, have you tried to go into Safe Mode and see if you can get the system to boot up that way?

That brings up a good question, are you seeing the Dell splash screen at all?  Is the system powering up normally but not failing once it gets to Windows?  I'm trying to get a better idea of what you mean by "not even slightly", because a system that won't power up is handled differently than a system that won't load Windows.

Please give us a bit better idea of what you're seeing when you power on the system, what version of Windows (or other operating system you're using) and the specific model number of your Dell laptop.  Once I have that I'll be happy to make other suggestions on what you can try to resolve the problem.

The system doesnt power up at all. If there's supposed to be a light on when it's plugged in it's not showing.

It's been having trouble realising the power cable is plugged in for a few weeks, but the battery was full when this happened.

The power cable issue is intermittant, I thought it had stopped before this happened, but if so only for a few days.

I've tried with no usb devices pluggeg in, and it has no non standard drivers installed, just the ones auto installed from the dell site, and those a while ago.

It has VPN installed for my work (Cisco Anyconnect), and that works fine.

Hello,

A few quick things you can check.

With the AC adapter, do you see the blue LED lights on the cable, near the end, light up when you plug the adapter into a wall socket?  (don't plug it into the system yet).

If yes, does the light go off when you plug it into the system?

Next, the 3 LED lights just above the keyboard on the left side, are those turning on when you plug the AC adapter in?   Here is a quick guide to what the LEDs mean.

Check out this article on troubleshooting the Alienware 17, specifically the No POST and no power sections. When you follow those instructions do you hear a series of beeps from the system?  The beep codes are explained in the article, but help to diagnose what the issue is.

Run the diagnostics as explained in the article.  See what, if anything, is reported.    Let us know what results you get from these various steps, and record them.  You may need to contact Dell Tech Support and they will request you verify the results.

I hope this helps.

It's at work in my office, in a dark little corner, all cold and sad.

I'll try those steps tomorrow or point them out to the IT guy if he turns up, thanks
