17R SE 7720 8 Beeps
Hi,
I had my laptop in the backseat of the car, and when I opened the door it fell out onto the ground. I tried to boot it after this, and the screen was well.. it is difficult to describe, but all kinds of lines and crazy colors. In other words broken, but it booted OK.
I connected a VGA cord to an external monitor, and was able to get a picture on the external display. This indicates to me that CPU, GPU, MB, HDD, etc. are all OK, and I simply broke the screen when I dropped it. So I ordered a new one. At this point it would boot OK, but i just couldn't use the internal monitor.
While waiting for the new screen to arrive, I took the laptop apart to get the screen out. After I did this, I realized i needed a file, so without the screen attached, I hooked it up to an external display. The laptop wold not boot. It hung at post with an 8 beeps code, which Google says is an LCD failure , which makes sense since there was no LCD attached to it!
Today I installed the new screen. When I go to boot the computer, it hangs on post with an 8 beeps code, but it also shows a very clear test pattern on the new screen. It shows like full red, then full green, then checkerboard, then gradient.... etc. etc. So, now the screen is working properly, and clearly connected correctly. I didn't make any changes to any other hardware, so that should still be OK. I don't know why it won't boot now. Is there a "reset" button to clear the 8 beep LCD code, like OBDII on a car?I haven't yet tried pulling the battery out of the MB, and would like to avoid that if at all possible in case it messes up my windows install.

Hi jasonps87,
8 beep code is for LCD failure. Also correctly mentioned by ejn63, if the LCD is not identical it is possible that it may not work. You may try releasing the residual charge from the system, here are the steps:
This will not cause any data loss. There is no reset button to clear the beep codes. Also, I would recommend that you reseat the LCD and LVDS cable and make sure the connections are secured. Then check functionality.
Please refer to the Service Manual of this system for instructions on assembling and dis-assembling the hardware components. Follow the 'Safety Guidelines' listed on the manual to help protect your computer from potential damage and to help ensure your own personal safety.
If the issue continues, you may consider replacing the LVDS cable first and then the LCD. Hope this helps.

Is the new screen identical to the old one? If not, is it known to be compatible with your system model? Notebooks work only with those screens that they're designed to recognize.

I was very careful before I ordered the screen. To the best that I can tell it is at least fully compatible, if not exactly identical.

I just tried to clear the residual charge, but it had no effect. I don't have the time right now to try to reseat the cable, but I'll try that next.

OK, it is working again. I took the WHOLE thing apart again, and found that the monitor cable on the back of the screen was loose. I plugged it in, and made sure it clicked and put the tape on it. Just to be sure I tested the system before I put it all the way back together.
Thanks for the help. Now I just to fix the bug that shipped with the system. I looked it up, and it is called Windows 8. Does anyone have a solution to this problem? ;-)!
