RE: Adding 2nd M.2 SSD to Precision 7510

Jump to solution

I'm kind of in a different boat.  I need the recommendation for an M.2 drive to add to the 2nd bay as a boot drive.  I've got a HDD in the first bay.

Thanks

@Community,

I can now confirm for you that it is technically possible to install a 2nd M.2 drive into the Precision 7510 and Precision 7710 systems, even if the system(s) were not ordered that way from the Dell factory.

For the installation of the 2nd M.2 you will need:

1x 745TM 2.5 inch metal bracket - most units will have this already included

1x Y1WJX M.2 bracket ( goes inside of 745TM )

4x 2864D M3X3 screw. Most systems will have these already included. These screws hold in the Y1WJX M.2 drive carrier, or a 2.5 inch drive into 745TM. M.2 carrier installed shown below:

1x WPTND M.2 Interposer Board. This installs into Y1WJX M.2 bracket. ( Shown in yellow in below screen shot )

5x 4270E M2.0*3L screws

1x HR8P8 M.2 thermal cover

Installation:

Once installed, this is how things should look and be set in the BIOS:

Outstanding... very detailed and specific. Just what we needed. I'm very familiar with deep digging into Dell laptops over the past 15 years, but few are, so pictures certainly help clarify even further.

Kudos, Justin for your effort in digging up this information and following up on this posted question. Granted, only about three of us have joined in on the discussion, but I assure you this will help many others that will have the same question.

Thank you!

You're most welcome Furo99. Thank you for your kind words.

If you're interested in purchasing the parts, you're welcome to send me a friend request and I'll see what I can do.

Hello Justin,

I see that you have al of the part numbers designated to put an M.2 drive in the SSD bay of a Precision 7510. Are these parts available for purchase and if so how much is each one?

Ps. Also assuming that the add-in M.2 in the SSD bay will operate at full PCIe x4 speeds... correct?

Thanks

@Jake Gua,

I've accepted your friend request.

I'm also seeing if I can get some documentation regarding the speed.

Thanks for doing that, I'm so glad I found this thread and that you were willing to help everyone with this.

About the parts; are they available for us to purchase? I have a 7510.

Thanks!

Great thread and awesome support Justin!

I'd like to get the parts (I'll friend request you).

Just one hint: In your solution you say "Interposer board - shown in yellow". Yellow is the heat sink, the board is green afaict.

thx!

If the price and speed info has been determined, could it be posted here?  I expect a new 7510 tomorrow and will likely want to do this upgrade as well. Thanks!
