Alps Touchpad driver won't install in Inspiron 17R

Inspiron 17R N7110, Windows7 Home Premium

I am trying to install the current Alps touchpad driver R307442.exe as listed under my service tag. Of course I am doing this to have some control over the touchpad, which I have none now.  The installation fails every time (install wizard).

I have looked at the other driver updates, and there are 2 bios updates, but it doesn't appear they would affect the Alps install (bios#1 for Windows8 upgrade, bios#2 to revert to old bios) and I don't want to install them anyway.

Any help in installing this Alps driver is much appreciated.

not4apple,

If the touchpad driver does not install. Reinstall the chipset drivers and then install the touchpad drivers.

•Windows 7 is installed: 1.Click Start.
2.Click Control Panel.
3.Click Hardware and Sound.
4.Click Mouse.
5.Click the Dell Touchpad tab.
6.Click the link, Click to change Dell Touchpad settings.
7.Locate the Touchpad On/Off option to disable or enable the touchpad.
Note: Depending on the touchpad software version, the on/off option may be located in the Device Select section; it may be necessary to look in all the sections. If you cannot find a Touchpad On/Off option, the touchpad manufacture and software does not support this feature.
