Audio Problems with Dell Latitude CPX J.

Good Evening.

My aging Dell Latitude CPX J has an audio problem. When I attempt to play any audio or video file from a CD or DVD or the ones stored on the hard drive, there is no audio. The volume control in Windows Media Player is set to high. When I click the Volume Control on the task bar and move the slider up or down, I can hear the ding sound from the speakers. This laptop as an ESS Maestro PCI Audio (WDM) sound card. I checked all the drivers and everything seems to be fine there. It has Windows XP Pro with SP1 with all the updates. I'm suspecting this may be a hardware issue. Is there anything I can do regarding this? Or should I be looking into purchasing a new or slightly used laptop that's more up to date?

Thank you in advance.

Vlad

I would try uninstalling the device, and reinstalling but try using this driver for kicks:
