Beep sound when keys are depressed

My son is in the Peace Corps and has a Dell Lattitude Pentium II laptop.  He recently upgraded the operating system to xp and now the keyboard beeps on every keystroke.  He does not recall when exactly the problem started.  In order to type he has to mute the sound and thus cannot listen to music as he types.  Any help would be much appreciated.
