C400

I have the new C400 (a very nice machine). However, there is one problem: When I boot up the machine, the touch pad works for a few seconds, then the machine freezes for about 10 secs and then comes back alive. All works great after that.

The system log does not give too may hints on what might be going on. One thing that looks suspicious is the following:

The ring buffer that stores incoming mouse data has overflowed (buffer size is configurable via the PS/2 mouse properties in device manager).

I have doubled the buffer size for the touch pad, but that did not help. Any idea how to fix it?

Armin,

I may just be that the driver is corrupted.
I recommend that you download the latest driver and see if that resolves the issue.

You can get all the drivers for your system that Dell has validated, at our File Library.

Click Here to go to the Dell File Library.

Just put in your service tag, select the Operating System you have and choose the driver(s) that you want.

If you are unable to find the driver(s) through Dell, you may need to go to the manufacturers website to see what they have available.

Thank you for choosing Dell.

Hi John,

Thanks for the advice. I downloaded the touchpad driver from Dell and reinstalled it but nothing has changed. The computer still is stuck for about 10 sec before it come back alive again. This only happens after a reboot after the login screen has appeared.

Do you haev any other advice?

Thanks!

Armin
PS: The e-mail notification to replies to posts on DellTalk does not seem to work.

eberlein,

Try the following.

1. Go to START | RUN and type "msconfig" (without the quotes) in the "Open" box; click on "OK".

2. Click on the Startup tab and remove all checks EXCEPT for :

ScanRegistry,
TaskMonitor,
PCHealth,
SystemTray,
LoadPowerProfile,
SynTPLpr,
SynTPEnh,
LoadPowerProfile.

Don't worry if all are not present.

3. Click on "OK". You will be prompted to REBOOT. Allow your system to reboot.

4. After the system has restarted, see if the problem still occurs.

If the problem still occurs, then you can put all the checks back in MSCONFIG, because your startup is not the problem.

If the problem no longer occurs, go back into msconfig, and recheck the items in startup one at a time.
You will need to click OK and REBOOT after each item is checked to test if that item is the cause of the problem.

Thank you for choosing Dell.

Thanks, John. Over the holidays I tried something else: I reinstalled some of the Win XP upgrades/patches and that has resolved the issue (at least so far).

Thanks for your help. I will keep your advice in case I need it in future.

BTW, the notifications "E-Mail Me When Someone Responds To This Post" and "E-Mail Me When Someone Responds To This Thread" still don't seem to work.

Overall, the C400 is an excellent notebook!

Why in the world would someone recommend reinstalling the driver to fix such a problem? Is this the standard stupid response to get someone off your back? Reinstalling the driver would do *nothing* to solve such a problem. If there were a problem with the driver, the touchpad would not work at all.

jdougher,

It's amazing, not only do you not add anything to a technical conversation but you jump in after it has been cold for over seven months.

What is your idea for a fix or did I miss it?

Sorry, I seem to have been bounced from the UK website here when I wanted to post a question. Could kind person direct me to where I should go if this is the wrong place...

I just tried inserting a Netgear PCMCIA 108Mb wireless card in my C400 for the first time and it makes Windows XP freeze (even the mouse pointer). As soon as I eject the card, everything returns to normal.

So I tried inserting my Vodafone 3G card instead, and exactly the same happens. Windows XP freezes incl. mouse pointer until I eject the PCMCIA card, and back to normal.

When I removed the TI card bus controller from device manager, I could insert either card, but as soon as I refresh device manager and the TI 1410 bus controller driver reinstalls, everything locks again until I eject the card.

Is this a driver problem? Is this the right place to post this question?

Thanks in advance.
