CD/DVD Drive skips and stutters when playing Audio CDs in Windows Media player

Problem Description:

CD/DVD Drive skips and stutters when playing Audio CDs  in Windows Media player ver.11.0.5721.5268 ,throughout the songs.

Music plays fine In Windows media player from HDD, and with other players IE: Win Amp, from CD player.

No new software has been installed and this began happening for no known reason about 1 week ago.

Steps taken to repair from Dell self help and internet suggestions:

System restore to two weeks ago.

Update Drivers from Dell drivers’ site:

None of these items has changed the original problem.

Also cleaned the drive and changed digital to analog settings per Win media player help site ,all to no avail.

Dell support for waranty is hardware only and this is apparently a software conflict of some kind that I can not figure out.
