Can Inspiron 6400 /E1505 support 4GB RAM?

I installed Vista x64 on my computer with 2GB RAM, it eat up 60% memory even no application to run, so I need more ram .

I searched intel mobile 945 chipset can support 4GB RAM, but dell only advitised that support up to 2GB.  maybe Dell just as before, only advited it only support 533MHz RAM while it actually support 667MHz.

Anyone have tried with E1505 with 4GB RAM?

   Thanks

Sorry, 2GB max. With vista you can add extra memory using a USB Thumbdrive or a memory card like an SD card but the performance will be limited to the speed of the Flash Memory.

I just saw someone have successfully added 2 x 2GB memory  to 6400/1505.

I'm trying to find an answer to this question. I have 2gb of RAM in my E1505 (Running Vista)currently. Dell claims it will only support 2gb max. I have someone at work who claims he was the same laptop as me and put 4gb of RAM in it and it worked fine. Is he full of it? Has anyone tried it?

Hi, I have an Inspiron 6400(identical system) and I am running vista32bit with 2x2gb memory fine without any problems. Only problem I got after the memory upgrade: Ubuntu Gutsy(7.10) starts only with 2gb inside, with 4gb it fails to startup. Trying to figure out why... assuming it will be neccessary to reinstall Gutsy. btw. anyone experienced such problems? (help would really be welcome)

1505 has a 32 bit chipset - even with a 64bit OS and 64bit CPU the bus is still 32bit. as such it cannot address 4gb of ram. the max is 3.25 to 3.5gb based on the chipset.

2x2gb sticks will also not run in dual channel mode which is why dell does not support them.

It will boot and will run but may not be worth it for the performance loss.

Yes. The E1505 supports 4GB of memory. However only 3.2GB is recognized by the operating system, which in my case is either Windows XP Pro or Vista Business Edition.

Having upgraded from 2GB to 4GB, the performance gains are excellent.  Especially for my use when running VMWare, and my ability to run ten (10) VM Guests.

I have bought 2 modules of 2GB RAM Kingston KVR667D2S5/2G. It works fine for me. I must only recommend it.

Hi I was wondering if these would work:

http://www.offtek.co.uk/product.php?manuname=Dell&maincat=1&subcat=1&model=Inspiron+1521

And whether its worth the money for the performance boost?

The E1505 supports DDR2 PC2-5300,DDR2 PC2-4200.  If you have the 1525, which I think you do, then it supports DDR2 PC2-6400,DDR2 PC2-5300.

Your selection will work and provide 32bit Windows XP/Vista with a maximum of 3.2GB of working memory, which in my opinion is an excellent upgrade and well worth it.  And if you are running 64bit Windows XP/Vista, then you can take advantage of the full 4GB.

The Inspiron 6400 is the equivelant of the E1505, so either the DDR2 PC2-5300 or DDR2 PC2-4200 is what you would want to purchase. At Crucial, it's the following:
