Corrupted registry- need to re-install operating system
Hi all - In trying to rid my computer of a not very well known variant of the Geobot worm (the W32.Geobot.AFJ) I had to make changes to the registry. And I guess I messed it up cause my Insprion 8200 will only start in safe mode. I was on the phone with Dell technical support and trying various things (system restore, writing new master boot files, etc.) was told I had to re-install the operating system. Now I made a backup of the entire registry before tinkering with it but the tech support person couldn't give me support for how to use this back up. Any thoughts on this? Is is possible to to load back up the original registry so that I don't have to zap my hard drive?
I haven't backed any files up. What is the best way to do this? Manually copy them to my CD-ROM? I was thinking of buying somebody's back up software (like Norton Ghost) but then started wondering whether it would even be possible to install it in safe mode since I have Windows XP Home.
Any help would be much appreciated, I am a PC rookie.

You're not going to be able to use the CD-RW drive in safe mode.
Your best bet is to purchase a $5 adapter cable, mount the notebook's drive in your desktop, and copy what you need from the notebook drive to your desktop's drive. Then reinstall Windows, reverse the process, and restore your files.
