D600 - Do I have Bluetooth capability?

I never paid attention before, but I noticed that next to the hard-drive light on the hinge there is another indicator that looks like the bluetooth symbol. I cannot find anything on the control panel regarding bluetooth, but windows XP help suggests it should be there.

Was bluetooth a missed option at purchase? Can it be added?  Thanks for your help.

Bluetooth device is an optional item for your D600,

you have to order it from DELL , figure how to take apart your laptop and insert the device in.

They all have the indicator, but the module was an option.

BIOS Setup (F2 on boot) will show it and allow 'enable' if it is there
and working.

D600's were noted for connection problems (they plugged directly into MotherBoard)
and the others use a cable connection).

For that reason, would recommend a PCMCIA Version.

Hi,

The 2 prior Posts are good reasons to not use the Dell one. As Art has said, PCMCIA or even miniPCI is a good choice. There is a minPCIcard ( I have no link ) that has Blue Tooth and Wireless on it. It could be worth a look.

What about the USB Bluetooth dongles? Are they good?

Hi,

I have not used one, but you may have other USB devices to use, and with bits sticking out there is always more risk of damage.

The warning from Chris about damage risk is a concern (your USB socket is part of your MotherBoard and
it would not take a lot of impact to a stiff dongle, sticking out, to do $erious damage).

My IntelliMouse had included a MS Bluetooth version 2.0 Dongle that I was glad not to need.

My thought on the best way to use it on a Portable, would be to get a [male - female] extender
cord (had one from a flash card reader) and that would minimize the risk.

Now, a PCI combo WiFi/Bluetooth sounds like the best idea, if you need to buy something
besides what will be included with your Mouse (or whatever) BT Device.

Here's a link to a lot more information on solving the D600/Bluetooth Problems.

This mod fixes the internal bluetooth connection problem that's plaguing the 600m/D600 notebooks
by moving the bluetooth module to a different location inside the notebook.

Doing so also makes it possible to upgrade to the newer bluetooth card - the TM350.

Quite a project!!!

Art,

That was an interesting link.  ( as usual ) I contacted Dell quite some time ago with a similar idea. It is the sort of mod. to do before the problem, as apart from coming loose, the soldered connection to the socket on the MBD can crack. That will make the repair a whole lot harder. Another " fix " I have heard of is a rubber block on top to stop the card lifting. ( not the card itself, but a U section to fit over the plug / socket )

                                                                                  Regards Chris
