D820 keyboard/mouse USB problems with Vista and dock

I've seen this problem elsewhere, but thought I'd make my own posting and see if there's been any progress.

Latitude D820, running pr01x port replicator.  USB devices cut out frequently.  Mouse and keyboard stop working momentarily.

Connecting kb/mouse directly to the laptop's USB ports works fine.  Seems like the problem happens only with powered USB hubs.  The USB hub on my 2001FP monitor causes the same problem.

I tried a different, newer port and I get the same thing.  Weird thing is, we've got a bunch of D630s in my building also running Vista SP1 that don't have this problem.  This is the first machine I've seen that does this.

I've upgraded the BIOS to A09, installed all new chipset drivers too.  The latest Intel chipset driver is pretty old, 01/22/2007, so that didn't help.

Dell chat support does not seem to have a solution.  It does not appear that this problem is very widespread.  I've found some posts in various forums, but not a ton.

Any ideas?

I also have this problem and it started after having my motherboard replaced. This would be the second motherboard that was replaced, the first was to repair the wireless switch and the second was to repair a docking station issue. Now I have a USB enhanced keyboard that will stop working after about 10 - 20 minutes.

Tried uninstalling all usb related drivers as well as connected the keyboard into several other usb ports. I've now switched over to a standard USB keyboard and waiting to see if this continues to work.

I also have a wireless USB mouse from Logitech and this has been working after the keyboard dies.

I'm sad to report that the problem persists with Windows 7.  I'm not terribly surprised.

The problem is directly related to the nvidia driver.  I don't know how, but the video driver is conflicting with the USB hub.  Unfortunately, the latest video driver for the D620/D820 is a Vista driver from Nov 2007.  No update since.

When I uninstall Dell's nvidia driver, the problem goes away.

Blah.

Hmm, interesting. I made the mistake of installing the Vista driver from Nov 2007 first, before even attempting a Windows driver update. I'm going to reimage and try again. What is the date on your nvidia driver? You're still using the laptop (D820) on a dock with keyboard/mouse connected via a USB hub?

HMM, running win 7 for about three months now and no problems, below is nvidia driver info.

NVIDIA System Information report created on: 01/21/2010 16:48:48
System name: BICNJ1G9T0HC1

[Display]
Processor:  Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU         T7200  @ 2.00GHz (1995 MHz)
Operating System: Windows 7 Professional, 32-bit

3/6/2009 is the date and I'm still using the same computer on the same dock with the same mouse and keyboard. I actually got a bigger HD, using vista (for testing) and Win 7 in production (dual boot). I run VMWARE and it always finds USB attached devices (hope I'm not jinx'n myself).

Yes, the NVIDIA update was the first entry in my windows update history log.

Thanks for the reply. Did you just update your nvidia driver via Windows Update?

Tried a different 2001FP monitor, then tried a 2007FP, same thing. I'm at a loss. It must be bad software.

I would like to pitch in with my experience as well. I have a D820 and have installed W7 during the week end. Back at the office I also start having these USB issues (mouse and keyboard interruptions).

For the record, I have a Quadro NVS 120M video adapter. I have a PR01X port replicator. My display is connected through DVI and my external input devices (mouse and keyboard) are connected through the external display USB ports (an integrated USB Hub). All with Windows 7 x86.

In addition to this, I have to report that the computer sound does not output through the docking speaker output (this might well be a different issue though).

What I installed:

  • During setup, Windows did not find a suitable driver and I had the generic VGA driver installed.
  • I then installed Dell driver for Vista 32-bits (Nov 2007 version 156.83)
  • Then, Windows Update offered a new version which I installed as well (March 2009 version 179.67)

Before reading this post I tried:

  • Disabling a number of devices drivers, including the Display driver. Which led to the automatic use of the Microsoft Generic VGA driver. The problem was still present.

After reading this post, I tried the following software tests:

  • Rollback display driver to Dell/Nov 2007 version -> still get the problem
  • Reinstalled display driver Microsoft Update/March 2009 -> still get the problem
  • Installing an other Nvidia driver version 180.70 which has my display adapter appearing as a "GeForce Go 7400" -> still get the problem.

I finally started doing connectivity tests. Here are my results:

Docked External Display Input Devices RESULT
NO VGA Hub connected on laptop   problem occurs
NO VGA Direct to laptop   no problem
NO None Hub connected on laptop   no problem ???
NO None Direct to laptop   no problem

YES DVI Hub connected to dock   problem occurs
YES DVI Hub connected to laptop   not tested
YES DVI Direct to dock   problem occurs
YES DVI Direct to laptop   no problem

YES none Hub connected to dock   problem occurs
YES none Hub connected to laptop   problem occurs
YES none Direct to dock   no problem
YES none Direct to laptop   not tested

I don't know how you guys achieved to make it work. In the light of these tests I am unable to find any suitable workaround that do not require reconnecting my peripherals manually whenever I dock.

I can agree that this seems to somehow be related to the NVidia chipset and its drivers. Would there be any recommendations as to updates for USB drivers may be and/or chipset drivers?

For the benefit of everyone I did find a solution. My BIOS version was A03. I upgraded to A09 and both keyboard and mouse work fine now through the dock or the HUB.

I am also running A09 and have been for sometime. When I was running Vista this did not correct the problem. Only upgrading to Win 7 was I able to operate without my mouse or keyboard disappearing.

Thanks.  What is the version and date of your video driver?

I'm on the phone with Dell right now on the chance that they can assist.  There does not seem to be a direct way to contact Nvidia.

I've been running A09 since this problem started (which is when I installed Vista back in August 2008).

Here's a question for you all:

Under Vista, I was able to work around this problem by NOT installing an updated driver.  The native Vista driver worked well enough and did not cause problem with the USB hub.

However, the native Win7 driver (dated 06/21/2006!!) only allows a max display of 1280x1024 and it looks horrible.  There is no way for me to get the normal 1920x1200.  The only way to get the normal res is to install the "updated" Nvidia driver, which, of course causes the USB problem.  Has anyone else experienced this?

Good luck with Dell, thet told me it was not their equipment or drivers that was causing the problem. I do not run the native Win 7 driver and have the NVIDIA running at max resolution.

Good luck!!!

Just did yet another install of Win7.  Still no good.  Updated the driver manually this time, still doesn't work.  Blah.

BIOS A09, etc, etc, etc.  Dell was basically no help.
