DELL N5110 not recognizing SSD ( SAMSUNG S840 PRO )
Hello,
Maybe you can help me, because it's getting frustrating . Short version :
-Laptop DELL N5110 / Intel HM67 chipset / latest BIOS installed
-Samsung SSD 840 PRO 128 GB in caddy ( instead of dvd-writer ) / latest firmware installed
The problem : SSD is not recognized in BIOS . Sometimes , in windows , I see it after about 8-10 minutes after the boot ( with no interaction from my behalf , it just appears ....) . Lately, not even this works :( .
I did the followings :
-removed caddy ( while laptop is powered on ), plugged back in the dvd-writer (with a DVD in it ) ; it works immediately . DVD drive recognized instant , dvd contents showing . Done the swap several times , same result . So ==> there is nothing wrong with the cables/sata port ( btw , SATA II port because it's a pain in the ass to change the internal HDD on this DELL model to use a SATA III)
-tried the caddy ( with the SSD inside ) on another laptop, works like a charm ! Tried it several times , same result . Works perfectly . So ==> there is nothing wrong with the SSD or with the caddy .
Therefore , I ran out of ideas . I suspect maybe a BIOS problem , or SSD firmware problem with this chipset , or ... ?
Any ideas , please ?

Later edit : Ok , just figured out that with a SAMSUNG S840 120 GB ( not the PRO version ) , it works . So now the question is , what the hell is wrong ? My PRO SSD works on a different laptop ....so there is no problem with it.

Could be a bad caddy, bad drive -- if you have another system, see if the drive can be recognized there. If it's not, the drive is probably bad. If it is, the caddy is probably bad.
One thing you should note is that you won't be able to use the drive for the boot (OS) drive when it's mounted in the caddy.

Thank you for you answer . As I already mentioned in my initial post, I checked also the Caddy and the SSD in different systems , and they work .
I checked a Samsung 840 Normal in a caddy in my laptop , and it works . Therefore , I suspect something related to 840 PRO firmware . I also read somewhere that bios might not support drives larger than 120 GB on the port that it knows it should be a DVD-writer .
I don't want to boot from the caddy disk , so that's not a problem :) .
