They did explain in another thread. It's use is solely for their purposes when the end user contacts the help desk. It's not a necessary process for functionality and can be uninstalled with no ill effects.

That being said I noticed tonight that DFS was eating up 60 - 65% of the CPU Usage, it was the first time I've heard the cooling fan in my Inspiron with an i7 processor ramp up. I first disabled the service, found this thread and the link to another thread provided by johnptd on 20 Oct. and the Dell rep in that thread even  suggested removing the service. I've done such this evening and thus far no problems of note related to the uninstall and my CPU usage has dropped to  4-6%.

After the latest Microsoft update to Windows 10 (Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3199986))  the DFS driver went "crazy" on my Dell XPS8700 and started reading and writing to the hard-drive and using CPU like it was going out of style (I let it run for 18+ hours to see if it would complete whatever task it thought it was performing). I finally had to uninstall it and reinstall to correct the problem (and I still don't know what its purpose is).
