Dell 5150 would not boot up after memory upgrade

While upgrading my Dell inspiron 5150 from 500k memory to it's maximum 2Gig, I followed all the instructions,

wore the anti-static wristband, removed the power pack and the battery, let it sit for at least 10 minutes before installing the

2 X1 gig PC2700, DDR333MHz  memory chips in their slots. Re-installed the battery connected the power pack and pressed the start button.

I could hear the CD drive going but after 15 sec or so the computer swiched off and the screen remained blank throught-out the 15Sec.

OK.. were the chips defective?  However I went through the whole process again and installed my old  memory chips. Same result.?

Now although everything went smoothly, I fear the worst.   Anyone have a clue, other than I may have fried something inside the

computer? I had made sure I was grounded by the wrist strap and dells instructions on handling the memory exchange..

and heard no type of noise during the operation that would indicate that something snapped..

Try placing just 1 module in at a time and powering up to see if a slot is defective.

Make sure they are firmly clipped in. Often these problems are caused by the memory modules not being clipped in properly. Rally firmly push each module into the slot and listen to it clip in.

Thank you for the suggestion, however the chips are seated snugly in their clips . I rechecked to make sure.

no change..

hi golconda,

i would first try to boot it up into the bios setup.. hit power button and it should be either the f2 button or f8 button keep tapping fast until you go into setup it should beep. using your arrow keys and enter key look to see what it says memory installed to see if it picked up the ram sticks.

hopefully the mother board didnt flex too much. also when installing anything unplug like did and battery then hold the power button for atleast 10 seconds to dump dram and any remaining power (note)...so check the setup bios and i'll check back...good luck there..

Hi Xpsconfigure:

Applied your suggestions, tried several times, no luck. Also tried all the F keys

by tapping each quickly within the 10sec time frame between hitting the start button

and shutoff.

And thank you for taking the time to help me.

Hi Natakuc4,

Removed one 1Gig  module and it fired up ok.

installed my old 250k module in the slot and it

was still OK.. Looks loke I had a defective 1 gig module

that was the cause of my problem..

Thank you for making this suggestion.

Great, in that case you should contact the seller of your memory and ask for a replacement.

Hi

A couple of days ago when I placed my old memory back in the socket and it

worked, I thought I had finally succeeded.  However after working on the computer

and shutting it down, I found that the next day it would not boot up shutting

off in 10 sec.

I removed the old module from it;s socket and using a tetrafluoroethane aerosol

I thoroughly blew out the module socket to get rid of any dust or particle.

I then had an idea concerning my new 1gig memory module. On the far end of the

module is a key-way that fits over a key in the memory socket. . using an Exacto

knife I scraped away about 0.0002" to 0.0004" from the bottom of the key-way

making it deeper.  I inserted the 1gig module into the socket, replaced the battery

and hit the start button- bingo- it fired up showing 2.048 Gig of memory. I worked

in windows for a couple of hours and shut it down.. However I wasn't sure until

I started it up  ok today if I had finally solved the problem.

Once again

Thank you all and I wish you a Happy New year.
