Dell D410 - Advice needed - BIOS - Battery
The battery was dead so i gave it a 3 min charge and the D410 is currently running on that battery.
Went in to the BIOS but the BIOS is telling me :- Battery not installed.
I turned the D410 over pressed the battery button but thats dead.
Whats gone wrong ?
The battery in the D410 is a proper Dell designed for the D410.

Could be a dead battery, or could be a mainboard problem -- try a new Dell battery first (if the original is more than 18 months old).

Not sure how old the original battery is, i guess its the same as the D410 (4 years old).
Since we spoke I've had the D410 on charge for around 2 hrs and so far only 1 of the 5 battery lights comes when you press that button under the battery.
I booted the laptop with no charger lead plugged in but just the battery still in it, the BIOS gave me the same message as before and also said
:-
AC Adapter = 0
But when I booted the laptop with Dell charger lead plugged in + the battery still in it the BIOS gave me the same message as before for the battery but also said
:-
AC Adapter = 90W
So i guess the motherboard is ok and laptop are ok (as the BIOS can see when things are plugged in or not).
But you're right its probably a dodgy battery which the BIOS can't see.
It could work on the same principle that fuel gauge in car works, the guage may say empty but the car can run for another mile or 2 due to fuel at the bottom of the tank.
The BIOS can't see the battery but the D410 still works with a very dull screen on battery power.
I've orderd a new 9 cell battery and may order another one as backup as the D410 is a great little machine and i want to use it as much as i can when I am in the great out doors.
From Windows I tried to update the BIOS but Dell's BIOS utility wants to see the charger and battery plugged in at the same time.
But it can't see the battery so i can't update the BIOS.

This morning i got a new 9 cell battery for the D410, its not from Dell its one of those 3rd party OEMs.
To cut a long story short the problems I had with the BIOS not "seeing" the battery where with the dodgy old battery and not laptop's motherboard.
New battery has fixed the problem and I am very happy with the laptop.
The D410 may be 4 years old but its still a very well made machine with a feel of good quality,
To me the D410 is as good as the new Asus eeePC, Samsung NC10 or NC20 and others of similar spec.
In the UK you can get a 2nd hand D410 for around £150-ish = £100-ish less than the price of the newer netbooks with similar or more power than them.
With a new battery D410 has 3-4 hr battery life so its great value for money.
