Dell D430 SSD not recognized

Hi

 I have an Inspiron D430, the original Samsung 80GB HDD got thousands of BAD sectors, so I decided to replace it with an SSD. I bought a KingFast 32GB S1 series KF1804MCS PATA ZIF. The original one that i bought was defective, it was  replaced, now i have the second one of the same type, still not recognized by the system. BTW, the original HDD is recognized without any problem, so i assume it shouldn't be a cable error.

 Now the question is that is this SSD compatible with my system, or  I have an awfully bad luck with 2 defective drives? Thanks in advance.

Hi!

Yes, I wrote it erroneously, it is a Latitude D430, with a PATA ZIF connection. BTW, the problem is solved, I went today to the vendor and they changed my drive again and now, finally i have luck, this is working fine (the same type of KingFast 1.8" PATA Zif SSD ). So the conclusion is: don't ever buy a KingFast drive without your laptop in your hands to check everything is working fine, coz' many of them should be defective. At least this is my opinion, after 2 defective drives in a row. BTW, it IS compatible, i must say it loudly for anyone who searches high and low to find out this answer. I'll be back soon with some application load times for those curious about a PATA SSD speed.

Hello Master_Andus,

I guess you are referring to a Latitude D430. If not, please help me with exact system model. 

Latitude D430 had two options for the hard drives. PATA hard drive and SSD (SATA). The SSD drive comes in a 2.5-inch and 1.8-inch form factor. The 1.8-inch drive has a PATA interface but comes with an adapter that allows it to connect to a SATA controller. The 2.5-inch drive uses a standard SATA connection as with other drives of this size. Hence I would request you to ensure if the you have got the adapter that allows the 1.8" 32GB PATA ZIF SSD to connect to a SATA controller. This might be the reason why the drive is not getting detected on your computer. You may also get 2.5" SSDs which would not require any adapters and would work just fine.

Hello!

As i promised, i'm back with benchmark scores, because i couldn't find any benchscores for this device.

Kingfast S1 Series KF1804MCS 32GB ATTO score:

And the AS SSD benchmark score:

The read speed is fair, but the write is quite low, below half of the specified by the manufacturer.

I made a real-life measurement too, i copied my C:\Dell\ Drivers folder (250MB of small files) to another location on C:, just to see how fast is this SSD when reading and writing at the same time. So, the copying of the 250MB data took 4 minutes and 09 seconds, which is approx. 1MB/s.

The copying of 168MB of data (my Portable Firefox folder) from the ramdisk to a folder in C: took 54.8 seconds, which is equivalent to 3.05MB/s.

Copying a single large file of 374MB from a folder in C: to another folder in C: took 15.4 seconds , equivalent to 24.28 MB/s.

The same large file copied from the same folder to the ramdisk took 31 secs, which means 12MBps. Copying back the file from ramdisk to the drive gives the same result. I cannot explain why is this slow. Theoretically copying from and to the RAM should be lightning fast (the max read and write speed given by the benchmarks).

For comparison, the Samsung HS082HB i had in this laptop, has the following speeds according to the HD Tune results found here:

Read minimum: 11.6 MB/s

Read average: 29.5 MB/s

Read max.: 36.5 MB/s

Acces time: 19.9 ms

  My system is a Win7/64, newly installed on this D430, with properly aligned partitions. The factory specified maximums are 80/40 MBps read/write for this SSD.

I recommend the use of a ramdrive with the swapfile and the Temp folder, as well as the browser cache in it for less drive acces and much smoother program running (especially the browsers with many tabs open).

I hope this test will be of good use to people not sure if one wants to keep the good old HDD or change to a new SSD.
