Dell D630 shutting down issue

Hi,

I have a Dell Latitude D630 here. I recently reinstalled Windows XP on it, which all went fine, but when I shut down the computer, it just shows my desktop (without the taskbar or icons though) for about ten minutes before shutting down. This long wait is very frustrating. Does anyone know why this might be?

Also, when I click "shut down" in the start menu, the option to "stand by" is greyed out. This has happened to me before on another computer. What is the problem?

Thanks

Hi 846,

Thanks for the update, you have to perform a clean installation of windows operating system and install the drivers in the correct order.

Note: back up all the important files and folders before formatting the system.

Use the link below to perform clean insallation.

Once the system is formatted, install the drivers in the correct order using the link below and check if the issue persists.

I did a clean installation of Windows recently and in fact the problem has only been present after performing that installation.

The only reason that I can think of that might be the problem is if I didn't install the drivers in the right order.

Thanks

Please perform clean insallation and then install the drivers in the correct order using the link which I have provided in my previous post. Check if the issue persists after performing the clean installation.

Thanks for your reply.

I will perform a clean installatoin of Windows, but I will not have time to do so for a while.

When I do the installation, I would like to upgrade to Windows 7 640bit (from XP 32 bit). However, I cannot find any drivers on the Dell website for 64-bit Windows 7. Do you know of anywhere where I can download them?

Thank you

Hi 846,

We have not tested windows 7 operating system (32 and 64 bit) with Latitude D630. Hence I am afraid there are no windows 7 drivers available for this system.however you can try windows vista 64 bit driver in compatability mode

http://dell.to/15WQDqX

Follow the steps below to install in compatibility mode

Right Click the driver installation file and select Properties/Compatibility Tab > check the box run this program in compatibility mode, Select the appropriate options.

Once the windows is installed, install the drivers in the correct order using the link.

Thank you for your reply. I will try that when I come to installing the drivers I will follow your recommended steps.

Will the computer automatically install some drivers by connecting to Windows Update?

If I look in Device Manager and there are no error messages, does that mean that all the necessary drivers are installed?

Thanks

Hi 846,

Yes, you are right some drivers will be installed while performing the system updates. In case there is no yellow bang or exclamation mark in device manager which indicates that all the necessary drivers are installed successfully.

Thanks for your reply.

From what you said, am I right in assuming that I will only need to install drivers for devices that have a yellow exclamation mark in device manager?

Thanks

Hi 846,

Yes, you are right you need to install the drivers which has yellow bang mark in device manager, apart from that you need to install the video drivers as well.
