Dell DataSafe Local Backup -Do you need it?

I have been using my Dell laptop for over 2 years and Dell DataSafe local backup has been annoying my with pop-ups. I disabled it using msconfig, but the messages keep popping up. I am using the default version, which has the basic features of restoring the pc back to factory state and creating a back-up CD. If I unistall Dell DataSafe Local Backup, will I be able to restore my computer back to manufacturing settings at a later date? Is System Restore unrelated to this software?

Weatherman97,

If you have the operating system disks, in ncase your hard drive failed or

If you made the Windows 7 - IMPORTANT Windows 7 Backup Disks to create , if you have Windows 7, you can remove Dell Data Safe and still restore or reinstall your operating system without it.

Yes you can. The reinstall to the factory settings will work if that software is uninstalled providing the partitions aren't changed. In the event of complete failure, you can reinstall manually as explained in my guide below providing you can read the 25 digit Windows product key on your COA (at base/battery compartment of laptops). Take a note of this key somewhere.

I used Dell Data Safe to Create Recovery Media, have a reinstall disc & have a Digital River download as well.  Am a familiar the Wiki for a clean install provided by natakuc4.  & there is really not much on this PC worth backing up anyway.  Once a month Windows backup is more than sufficient.

So I am little tired of Dell DataSafe just sitting there using RAM when it really has very little left to accomplish but I cannot find a way to keep from starting.  How did the OP stop it in msconfig - I do not see it.  Nor can I find an option within the appication itself.  Don't really want to delete it just keep it from starting.

thanks

Got Dell DataSafe outa there but had to move some app files around to do it - don't think that's the way to handle it:

moved these files ToasterLauncher, Toaster & DataSafe from folder:

C:\Program Files(x86)\Dell DataSafe Local Backup

To this folder we
created:

C:\Dell\Toaster Launcher

Also moved

DSUpd
from C:\Program Files(x86)\Dell DataSafe Local Backup\Components\DSUpdate to C:\Dell\Toaster Launcher

wow, you guys commenting in July are a few months too late.  If anybody at this point is interested I uninstalled the program in mid January and haven't turned back since.

At first glance it looked like 2 people. Everything's good, I like how you described it as hijacking, it gave me a laugh. (:

I too have been trying to figure out how Dell Datasafe Local Backup is executing at startup.  It isn't listed in the msconfig startup tab nor is it listed in services.msc as an automatic startup service.  I know that the file is toaster.exe which is probably called from toasterlauncher.exe but who calls the latter?

I finally figured it out.  It is the SoftThinks Agent Service.  If you look through the registry you'll see that softthinks is associated with Dell Datasafe Local Backup.

So I went into services.msc and set SoftThinks Agent Service from Automatic Startup to Manual Startup.  Then when I rebooted, no more Dell Datasafe Local Backup.
