Dell Inspiron 1545 - Print Spooler Errors
Hi,
I have bought a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop in 2009 which it previously had Windows 7 and everything worked fine until this print spooler problem occurs just happened in mid-2011 and until now with Windows 8.1 upgraded which I have done yesterday.
Everytime I go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers > Add a printer the problem occurs that the print spooler service is not running, this is what would Microsoft call it "Windows can't open Add Printer (Paragraph line) The local print spooler service is not running. Please restart the spooler or restart the machine."
I have tried this by going in to Services and Start the spooler service, but somehow another error message which come up saying "Windows could not start the Spooler service on Local Computer. (Paragraph line) Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion."
Is there a way to solve this issue?
Please reply back if you want pictures showing error messages instead of written text just to make it easier, please reply back.
Thanks!
Yours Sincerely,
Benjamin123

With the work that you done, it sounds like that they may be some problems with services that is needed for the print spooler to work correctly.
Let’s take a look at the services that is required for the print spooler:
Press the Windows key with the R key together to bring up run, type services.msc and press the enter
Once you have services up, find Print Spooler, and right click on it.
Click the “Dependencies” tab
Jot down all the services listed; these are services that are required to be running for Print Spooler.
Look down the list of services and verify that all required services are started. If you can’t find any listed, or if some refuse to start, try to remove any installed printer drivers and then reinstall the correct driver.

Thanks for the reply, I only have a service called "Spooler" and it has errors loading, so here is what I have in the Dependencies tab. But I'll check everything, by following your steps and follow the one which you wrote in grey.
This is a screenshot of the services with the pop-up of the Spooler service, the Dependencies tab.

The screenshot didn't go through but as long as you have the names of the services that is needed for the print spooler to run. Go through each service and start them. If you are able to find and start all of them you should be go to go, find the print spooler service and then start that.
If the problems continue then you likely have a corrupted printer driver installed, uninstall all printer driver files and then reinstall the latest version of the Printer driver. Lets hope that this isn't the case but if the problems continue you may need to reinstall Windows again.

Unless you formatted the hard drive before updating to Windows 8.1, there is a chance that any printer drivers that was originally installed on the system is still present and possibly causing problems. If you can find the older drivers and uninstall them it should go a long way in getting you back up and running.
If you have any services that was mentioned by the spooler service as a dependency, and these services are not running as well it could also cause a problem. If you have a needed service that is messaging that it has dependencies as well, I don't know if I would chase down each service, until you have tried removing any previous drivers, and tried reinstalling the newest driver.

Oh I see. But the problem is the that the laptop don't have any installed printers, because of the Spooler problem. I have just upgraded to Windows 8.1 a few days ago, so I am just wondering it might've come from the windows.old folder (which it was Windows 7). It might have a corrupted printer driver, let me try by deleting it.
Okay, so I have checked the other services from the Dependencies which they are listed below:
The service depends on the following system components:
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) - Service Enabled and Running
-> DCOM Server Process Launcher - Service Enabled and Running
-> RPC Endpoint Mapper - Service Enabled and Running
The following system components depend on this service:
-> Fax - Service not enabled and running. Error message: Windows could not start the Fax service on Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependency or group failed to start.
I have noticed a service called "PrintNotify", but it's not enabled and running and the error message says "Windows could not start the PrintNotify service on Local Computer. Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion." So I am just wondering this service might be compared with the Spooler service, but we need to find out.

Is there another way to remove the old printer drivers from the previous Windows operating system (which it was Windows 7) or the current operating system.
But what I done for the previous Windows operating system is that I went in to the C drive > windows.old > System32 > spool > then delete the folder.
I could try downloading a printer driver without installing a printer, will that help?

If Windows.old >System32\spool\DRIVERS doesn't work look for Windows.old\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository to remove any past printer drivers.
Yes, instead of trying to add the printer, try downloading and installing the printer driver and see if that helps.

Right I have deleted before files you requested, but do I have to do the same to the new "Windows" folder?
At the moment I am downloading the driver and then see what happens. I'll tell you the news after if I try and install the driver.

You may want to contact HP and see what they say about the error and they may have specific information that could possibly help out.
Other than that it still looks like to me that there are corrupt drivers and until they have been fully cleaned, you may continue to have this problem. If you have a registry cleaner that you trust you may want give that a try and see if it can clean up your Windows installation.

Hi again,
I have just been flicking through some software disks and I have found Dell Drivers and Utilities and I would think the disk might install spooler drivers and things like that for the laptop.
I hope this helps. :)

The spooler is a Windows service, and files associated with it will very unlikely be on the drivers and utilities disk, unfortunately.
Where you able to contact HP and where they able to provide any assistance?
