Dell Inspiron & USB 2.0

Hi there!

Well, first off, I tried to find the answer to my question by searching Google and Dell support, but came-up emty handed....

So maybe someone out in the Community can answer this :-)

I have a Dell Inspiron 2650 P4 running XP SP2 bought in 2002.

I'm wondering if I can upgrade my USB 1.1 Intel 82801CA Host controller (driver) to a USB Enhanced (2.0) Host controller for higher transfer speeds...? Or, do I need to buy a PCMCIA USB 2.0 card ....?

I've connected a brand-new 40G external hard drive (USB 2.0) to my laptop and it's sooooo slow. Windows XP keeps telling me that I need a USB 2.0 Host Controller for faster speeds....

thanks in advance guys !!

ciao,
Mark

Hi again,

OK, I did an 'advanced search' on Dell Suppport and found my answer finally.
My laptop has only USB 1.1 and I need to buy a PCMCIA USB2.0 card :-(

thanks!

Cheers,
Mark

Well, try buying the Compaq USB 2.0 PCMCIA card (around $30) I am sure you will experience that your external drive is reading at very high speed. The only thing I observed that it does not show USB 2.0 root hub in device manager.

Alternatively try NEC cardbus adapter and let me know whether that helps.

I am definitely happy with the speed but not with Dell Technical support :)

I am sitting right here with Inspiron 2650 that has a USB 2.0 PC card.
For myself, I am waiting for a mini-iPod to format for Windows XP Home edition.
The iPod is still flashing 'Do not disconnect" so I assume it has not yet finished.
