Dell M1710 laptop
I just bought an XPS M1710 laptop via eBay. I know that...when it came out...it was considered a "gamer" machine, but I'm just going to use it mostly for word processing and internet surfing. Is there some way I can turn off all the extra red lights that (I suppose) were included to help the computer look "cool" when it came out? I know that a lot of users like that, and want a computer to have a little extra "flash". But I'd rather turn off the unneeded lights to save power usage. Is there a way to do that?

You should be able to turn those in the Control Panel from the Start icon and under appearance Personalization or Hardware and Sound ,latter seems more likely to be where to do that at.I have the same system only not the gaming part as I wanted it for music and video to stream to the flat panel or just watch on the XPS17 itself.
Try the latter (Hardware and Sound) and it should have where you can disable it there,if not then try the 1st and see if it can be done in that portion of the Control Panel...Note that they have 2 places where things can be accessed on the left,top and bottom,so check carefully...

Hello David,
Turning off all the laptop lights is easy. I also have them turned off on mine.
The easiest way is to enter the BIOS on your laptop. Just press the "F2" key on your keyboard when you start your XPS M1710.
Once there you should go to the "Onboard Devices" section on the BIOS Screen menu and change the settings for "System Fan LEDs", "System Panel LEDs", "System Speaker LEDs", "System Touchpad LED" and maybe also for "System LED Brightness" if any of the above you decide to keep on.
