Dell Studio 1737 - Battery will not charge

The battery on my laptop ran out of charge and the laptop switched off.  The battery indicator light turned to solid orange.

When I plugged the power adapter in, the battery would not charge so I could not turn on the laptop.

I then removed the battery and reinserted.  Then when I replugged the power adapter, the battery began charging and I was able to use the laptop.

Does anyone know if this indicates a problem with my battery or laptop?
