Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition : very very noisy fan

Hie,

My company have just bought a Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition to make development with IDE like Eclipse, Pycharm ... It's a normal utilisation for a developer but when we start develepment in this laptop, the fan is very noisy. We have make some search, we are on the A07 BIOS with Ubuntu which is installed by default.

Please, have you got a fix for that noisy fan ? Temperature is too high to just launch an application and there isn't enough speed for the fan and they can't be control by lm_sensors. So what do you purpose instead of resell it ?

If think it's not normal to sell a laptop "Developer Edition" if it isn't available for development. We are very unhappy about this laptop.

Hi Mael V,

Fans become loud or behave abnormally due to:

  • An out of date BIOS.
  • Obstructions in the fan or vent area.
  • Physical Damage.
  • Dust accumulation in the fan or vent area.
  • Using near a heat source or in a hot environment.

Clean Air vents:

  • Check the vents on the computer to see if they are covered with dust and not allowing heat and air to pass through.
  • Turn off the System
  • Remove all power sources: Unplug the AC Adapter and Remove the Battery, or Unplug the Desktop Power Cord.
  • Use a compressed air can to blow the dust out of the vents. Be sure to hold the can at an upright (near 90 degree angle) and hold it 15-20 centimeters (6-8 inches) away from the target.

Hardware Diagnostics Check:

Run diagnostics on the computer. Restart the computer by holding the FN + Power button simultaneously to run diagnostics.

Awaiting your response!

There is no physical damage.

We have raise the laptop so the fan is not obstructed.

Our office is in Lyon, France and we haven't dust there.

The hardware diagnostics is 100% OK.

But I advice you to try. Take an XPS 13 Developper Edition with Ubuntu and launch a web browser and Eclipse. At each small compilation or script execution, the fan is very noisy. It's not acceptable for a developer.
