E4300 laptop BIOS - unable to set the HDD password

I recently changed the HDD in my e4300 laptop (windows 7-64 OS, Bios version A23) to a Western Digital Scorpio Black 750GB (WD7500BPKT) - previously it was a 250GB Western Digtial Scorpio Black (WD2500BJKT). The new HDD currently has no BIOS HDD password set and for some reason I am unable to set the password.

When I attempt to set the HDD password in the BIOS  under the "security" menu option the following occurs

1) Enter old password is greyed with the text "not set"

2) I enter a new password

3) I confirm the password

4)  I then get a warning message stating old password was not correct and the HDD remains with no password protection

I have tried the original 250GB drive and another 320 GB drive and have been able to successfully set and clear the harddisk password on these disks.

Any suggestions?

One thing to check is to make sure your system has the latest BIOS revision for your model.

I have a Precision M4400 with BIOS A27.  The same problem happens to me using an Intel 520 series 120GB SSD.   It says Old password  not correct when trying to set a HDD password (even though there is none)

I've been searching the internet high and low for answers. I suspect it is a BIOS problem.  Can Dell look into this?

Seems to me that the common thread is that the first generation E Series Precision/ Latitudes have some sort of incompatibility with the ATA set.  Could someone at Dell please help us out? Releasing an updated BIOS would be nice!

Hello, I unfortunately also join to the problem and I need a solution to the Latitude E6400 with Intel SSD 520,120 gigabytes Dell BIOS version from A25 to A32 (latest), all reports: Old password was not correct!. Dell BIOS A10 (latest) on the Latitude D620 reports: The new password is unacceptable, but we do not need a D620, just for information, and Desktop Optiplex GX620 BIOS A11 (latest) set a password that works and I also tried it with colleagues on some newer Precision Desktop, where it also operates.

This problem I also told Dell Czech Tech Pro Support and they replied that it passed and await further observations.

OK. It works for me!...

Solution:

Admin password in the bios must be set first. Then exit from the bios and put F2 again. Then set your HDD password.

Now it works for me on E6400 and also on E6420 with Intel SSD 520 120GB.

Hope this helps.

regards

W.

Lucky you!   I tried your solution but no luck. I  Set admin password, exit bios, press F2 again and set HDD password but it still says old password not correct.

I have the M4400 with A27 BIOS. Any chance Dell will look into this?
