Had the same problem with creating disks. I have a XPS 8500 desktop with Windows 8. It already had the latest BIOS A09, so that didn't help me with my problem. I tried Michaels' approach and it worked! I didn't have to use an external drive though. Just used my regular drive and instead of clicking "OK" when inserting the new disk, just waited and as Michael said, it continued creating the disks until completion. Thanks Michael!

Well, don't thank me too soon; I seem to have been a little too optimistic too early.
Using an external DVD drive seemed to do the trick. I was able to burn all 4 Dvd's. But when I tried to use these discs for system recovery last week they failed.
I was able to boot from the first DVD and was asked first of all if I wanted to have my system repaired. The recovery program could find no faults and suggested to recover the system to the original factory installation. I was given the choice between just recovering the HDD with the O.S. on it, or to have both HDD set back to the way they were when I received my laptop from Dell.
Chosing for the first option the recovery program started but almost immediately the following error message appeared on the screen.
Error Error 0x400110020000100A Please contact Dell Support when this problem keeps occurring. OK
Next I made a backup of all data on my second HDD, and I was very glad I did so. Because when I chose for the second option the recovery program didn't bother with my system HDD and neatly set my computer back to the original factory settings on the second HDD!!!
The (first) system HDD still contained the faulty Dell Windows installation as it was before I started the recovery process, so now two system HDD's were shown in the Windows Explorer, one on the C: disk and one on the D: disk.
After this I contacted Dell by Phone (the E-mail option was unavailable). A very friendly, helpful and seemingly experienced employee told me that he knew about these issues with the recovery discs and offered two solutions. Either to use a HDD or a Memory stick to write the recovery program to, but with the risk that the same error would occur when trying to recover the original factory installation. The second suggestion he put to me was to forget the factory installation alltogether and wipe the HDD and install Windows 8 from scratch. He offered to send me a Windows 8 Pro installation DVD and a DVD containing all the nessecary drivers for the hardware on my Dell Inspiron 17R SE 3D. He had experienced exactly the same problems with his own computer and this is how he solved the problems himself. He further advised to buy a good imaging program and make an image from the system once it seemed to work well.
There seem detailed instructions somewhere on the Dell website how to install and configure all the software and the hardware from scratch on your PC.
I'm planning to follow this Guy's advice as soon as I have received my Windows 8 disc by mail.
Greetings, Michael

Hi
I've got the same problem for a french inspiron 3520 && w8.
First DVD's successfully created, checked & ejected, but the process rejects every dvd I can insert for the second disk copy... and without any error messages ...
DBRM && bios are up to date.
How should I receive factory dvd ?
Many thanks !

Well..., after having tried all the different possible ways of burning the rescue-DVD's I decided to buy a 32GB USB 3.0 flash drive and save the system-image on this USB drive. it would have been wonderful if this would have worked, but unfortunately......
I tried connecting the USB drive before starting Dell Backup& Recovery and I tried plugging in the drive after starting the application, but in both cases this resulted in waiting indefinitely (I didn't wait that long but gave up after 30 minutes) for the little clock to stop turning and for the program showing me USB drives I can select to write the data to. But this never happens so it's also "no go" with the USB option :-(
I called Dell Support in the Netherlands and they told me that there is a bug in the Backup & Recovery application. There is no patch to solve this problem and there is no download available of a working version. In other words, they couldn't offer any solution. Sorry, tough luck, goodbye.

I can't get the backup info onto my USB Seagate Backup Plus Portable Drive. Nor does the backup for my Inspiron 660, Windows 8 64 bit work on any CD's and not on any of my many flashdrives.

Yesterday I noticed that Dell has released a new version of "Dell Backup & Recovery" on the download page. It's version 1.0.0.4 which replaces 1.0.0.2 that was factory installed on my Inspiron. I installed it on my PC and hurray!... I was able to produce a recovery HDD and a recovery USB memory stick. When I tried to burn a set of recovery DVD's the same thing happened as with the earlier version; after the first DVD was ejected the program asked for the second DVD but didn't burn it and kept ejecting it.
This morning I received an update message that an update to version 1.0.0.5 was available. so I have downloaded and installed it. I haven't tested it yet, but I hope that this update solves the last issue and Í'll finally wil be able to burn a complete and workin set of recovery DVD's.

At last..., it finally works!
I still can't burn the recovery DVD's using the internal DVD/BR drive in my Inspiron 17R; after one DVD the process still comes to a halt and the second disc I put in the drive will be ejected again. But the DVD's I made with my external USB drive finally worked and I was able to fully restore the factory image to the HDD.
Also with the other two recovery media produced with Dell Backup & Recovery 1.0.0.5 (USB HDD and USB Memory Stick) it now was possible to recover the factory installation.
I'm very happy; this means that after three months I can finally go and have fun with my (not so) new Dell laptop, not having to worry anymore about things going terribly wrong and not being able to restore the system to it's original state.
All the best and have fun with your Dell!

Hello Experts. I have got Dell Inspiron 14R. I am trying to create the recovery media, but after burning the 1st it asks for 2nd, and the moment i insert the second disc, it ejects it out without any information. I have tried creating the media from the start point thrice and every time faced the same issue, thus ending up with 3 first discs but process still incomplete.
This forum suggests that its a very common issue faced by almost everyone. Is there any solution to it?
regards, Ashutosh

Hello, I had the same problem last year as I purchased two laptops from dell. You will need to update your BIOS chip through the dell network. Your laptop has a dell like on the start screen that will walk you through the upgrades. Always install your upgrades from where you have purchased your equipment through. The industry changes quickly and new and updated software is what keeps things working. Good luck.

Same as other users on this post. My XPS 8700 ( Service tag removed per privacy policy>) crashes during the first disk of factory disk creation.
My home email is Email id removed per privacy policy>
I would like to get this fix AND also get a REAL Windows 7 professional disk mailed to me.
:-)
