Few Specific Characters appear only after typing key twice in Inspiron 15R 5520

Dear All,

I'm facing a very strange issue in my Inspiron 15R 5520 which I bought in August 2012. There are few characters, which appear only after typing the corresponding key on the keypad twice.

e.g. If I want to type tilde(~) character, then I have to press the key on the lest side of Numeric key 1. But, if I press it once, nothing appears on the screen. And If I press this key twice, then I get two tilde (~) characters. Same behaviour happens for four other characters. Given below is the list of characters, which do not show up by pressing key once, rather twice.

Surprisingly, when I was typing keys Shift+6 in the compose area of this forum, then the character caret (^) appeared after pressing key once. Whereas, if I try it in Notepad or Word Pad or in the address bar of Mozila FireFox, I'll have to press the key twice so that character appears twice and then delete the extra character.

Can you please help me?

Thanks,

Gaurav

The problem is with setting of Keyboard Language. You might have selected English (International) while setting up your laptop/desktop in the beginning.

Go to Control Panel -> All Control Panel Items -> Region and Language -> Formats.

Change Format to English(United States). It should solve your problem.

Hi Gaurav,

Let’s try few troubleshooting steps to isolate the issue:

  • Check if the keyboard works in “Safe mode with networking “(restart the computer and key tapping F8 on Dell logo and select safe mode with networking).Try using the keyboard in Safe mode with networking.

Also try below steps which can resolve the issue.

Turn off the computer.

Unplug everything except the power cord, including the following:

  • Speakers
  • Printers
  • Scanners
  • USB devices
  • Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs)
  • USB flash drive or other external storage devices
  • External Monitor
  • External Keyboard
  • External Mouse
  • If your computer is attached to a docking station, undock it.

Turn the computer back on and retest the keyboard.

  1. When the keyboard does work correctly, attach one external device at a time and test the keyboard to see which one may have caused the issue.
  2. When a specific key is not working, turn off the computer and use a can of compressed air to clean around the problem key and then retest the keyboard.
  3. If the problem only occurs in a specific application program, try another application program, such as Notepad and then test the keyboard. If the problem only occurs in a particular program, you may need to troubleshoot that particular program.
  4. Uninstall or disable any software that may change how the keyboard operates. This software includes:
  • Keyboard macro programs
  • External keyboard drivers
  • KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) switch software.

Try an external USB or Bluetooth keyboard to test if it responds correctly.

Awaiting your response!

Hi Rajesh.

Thanks for your reply. I tried all the methods, suggested by you, but it doesn't work.

1. I've only one external USB device (Wireless Mouse). I detactched that and restarted computer in Safe mode with Networking. Still, I faced issue with those three particular keys (5 character only).

2. I tried to type in Notepad, IE, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox. Everywhere, I noticed that unless I press some other key or the same key, none of these characters appear.

3. If you think, there may be some issue with keys, then it's difficult to understand how come character 6 appear after pressing once but character caret (^) doesn't appear unless followed by prssing of same or different key.

4. While I'm writing this reply, If I want to write any of those five characters (`,~,^,',"), I see these characters after just pressing the corresponding key once. But, same behavious is not seen in Notepad, IE, Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome.

5. I did not try uninstalling any Keyboard drivers or programs as I am not that much literate about computers. I wish any experienced technical person from Dell performs these things on my laptop.

Awaiting a solution.

Thanks

Gaurav

I have same problem with my Inspiron 5558. Seems to be fixed by changing the keyboard setting as suggested
