Fingerprint reader not working - Dell Latitude E5470

Fingerprint recognition on this laptop is really difficult to use. My old Vostro works quickly and easily, but it has never worked well on this machine.

I have to hold my finger down and press hard, sometimes it doesn't work at all, sometimes I have to hold it down hard for a long time.

I've tried deleting then reinstalling & updating the driver, which has no error message. Tried hardware scan also.

Is this a common problem with the E5470. With this type of fingerprint reader. Or is the hardware just faulty and in need of repair?
