Fn F8 CRT/LCD

Question

Inspiron 8000 running XP SP2.   Whenever I hook up my LCD Projector to the monitor port and hit the Fn F8 CRT/LCD it won't switch the video from the laptop to the external device.  Any suggestions?   Chris

Is it possible that you should begin with the PC shut down and powered off, connect the projector and turn it on, then power on the PC to allow Windows to 'discover' the device in order to make the monitor toggle work properly?

Doesn't make any difference and I've never had to do that in the past.
