Hardware OpenGL not working on Studio 1558 with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4500 series graphics card
I recently downloaded and installed Autodesk Alias Design 2014. On startup, it complains that my system does not have hardware accelerated OpenGL. That seems wrong, because the system has a dedicated graphics card.
I did the following to try to diagnose the problem:
- View the Alias Design System Diagnostics Log
- View the display adapter properties in Windows Control Panel
- View the display adapter properties in Windows Device Manager
- Try to update the driver from the device property dialog
- Look up the graphics card specs on the manufacturer web site
- Check system OpenGL support using the OpenGL Extensions Viewer tool
- Check system DirectX support using the DirectX Diagnostics Tool
- Try to install the latest driver using AMD AutoDetect Installer
- Try to install the recommended driver from the AMD driver download page
- Try to install the recommended driver from the Dell Support Wiki unofficial driver sets page
The results so far are:
- The graphics card is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4500 Series with 512 MB dedicated video RAM
- The current driver version is 8.97.10.6, dated 6/20/2012
- Windows believes the driver is up to date
- Alias Design strongly recommends having hardware support for OpenGL 2.0 or higher
- Alias Design and the OpenGL Extensions Viewer both agree the system currently supports only OpenGL 1.1, with no hardware acceleration
- According to AMD's online specs, the graphics card provides hardware acceleration for OpenGL 3.2
- The AMD autodetect driver installer believes the driver is up to date
- The AMD web site has a newer Windows 8 64-bit driver available, version 8.97.100.7, dated 1/21/2013
- The installer for the newer driver installs some other components successfully, but fails to install the actual driver with no explanation
- The installer for the driver recommended on the Dell unofficial driver wiki page does not offer to install an updated driver
I need to know how to get the right driver installed for this system, and configured correctly if necessary, so I can actually use the graphics card's OpenGL and other capabilities.
General system information:
- Dell Studio 1558
- 4 GB RAM
- 128 GB SSD (upgraded since purchase)
- Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit (upgraded since purchase)
Detailed diagnostic information follows.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!
