Help: Latitude XT Hard Drive Upgrade, SSD, Mini PCIe question and RAM upgrade issues..
To all fellow Dell owners/users and Dell representatives,
I have this Latitude XT for about 10 months now. Generally, I really appreciate the touch screen. However, I run into a few upgrade issues and questions. I hope you can offer me suggestions. (Dell's official IT rep, used to be here as well. I am not sure that's the case now. One of the reasons why I post my questions / issues here is that I tried contacing Dell's tech support (both phone and online chat.) already. They are LACK of knowledge about this model of this notebook. The funniest thing is that the Dell's phone support tell me that they DON'T HAVE this model!!! Ha... this is the most funniest statement I had heard from Dell's phone support. I believe there are a larger group of experts here, who can offer me more precise and correct answer. Please note that, I have followed Dell's online manual to take out the HD and check the drive already..
I have 3 main issues. 1,) Hard Drive upgrade possibility. which format / type, and size . 2.) Possibility ot use Mini PCIe slot for "Solid Stage Drive" or SSD. 3.) using Ram issues.
1.) To my understanding, and Dell's specs sheet. The internal HD for this model of notebook is PATA type and use 1.8" form factor. The use of 1.8" form factor is smaller than typical 2.5" form factor. This is the Main difference / issue in upgrading the HD for the system. Because it is 1.8" form factor, there are limited selection of HD that I can choose from, not to mention it uses PATA type. AND it requires special connector to connect to the system.
However, what's interesting is that.when I used Dell's " Parts & Upgrades for your Dell" link, and search for upgrade parts. It shows this 2.5" SATA drive is compatiable!! I called and chat with Dell regarding this issue. They don't seem to have a right answer. From phone support, the answer I got was "if it shows up, it has to fit. can I help you to purchase it." Wait.. have to actually check the specs of the system? or am I missing something here? or this drive can insert it with a module??
Here is the link for the Parts & Upgrades for your Dell under system drive.

Here is the link for the specific drive.
However, I think the above 250GB SATA is a wrong selection for XT model. It may works for other Latiude model, but not XT for sure. That's "wrong XT" item has been posted on Dell for more than 10 months now. I still don't see that they are correcting it. VERY VERY misleading to me.
I think the proper compatible version is this model
But for $500 for a 32GB.... it is kind of too pricey. ... I'd like to confirm if there is other choice on market, not only at Dell, available. and if it is reall the type of drive I should be looking for.
2.) Wait the price of SSD drop, I am quite interested in using / upgrading one for my Latitude XP system. I thought about using the ExpressCard version to boost the performance. However, I just found out that there is a Mini PCIe version of SSD avaiable as well!!! I don't have WAN card / Boardband card in the system. So, I have one empty slot of Mini PCIe slot available. I'd like to know if I can insert one of those Mini PCIe SSD in the slot. If so, which type? From New*gg.com it shows there are SATA and PATA.. but the connection to the Mini PCIe seems the same to me. However, there are some reviewers claiming that some of this Mini PCIe is system specific. It probably won't fit on other system, because of the size physical size issue. Do you have any knowledge about it?
3.) I have upgraded the system RAM from 1GB to 3GB, with a Corsair 2GB value Ram... The system boot ok and doesn't give me BSOD. However, there seems to be a problem with Firefox. FF would freeze very easy with it. Not 100% sure, but without the upgrade, the system run very slow. Without the upgrade, the system is kind of too slow to tell if FF freeze. Do you have any idea?
Thanks in advance.

Hiya,
I have also looked into alternatives for upgrading the hard drive, both in terms of space and performance (more the latter). I am looking at the Verbatim 64GB ExpressCard SSD, I haven't looked at mini PCIe options - so I would be interested in hearing if you get any further on that.
I think the disk/connector in this machine is a huge mistake in engineering - 1.8" PATA is a dead-end, and there will likely never been any more/better drives out for that configuration...

Try to use ZIF to mSATA adapter card with mSATA 250GB SSD hard disk
the only thing that can be troubles you is the power, if Dell XT uses max 1A for the motor hard disk 1,8
then the SSD specs must be under 1A... example 0.9A
