How do I Install Bios once dl from Dell site?

Question

Trying to install A15 bios update, using startup disk but can't seem to disable Himem, get message from bios update which says Cannot with memory manager running...eg. HIMEM...how do I disable HIMEM?

Thanks for your response. I am deleting config.sys file now. I had tried to rem out himem.sys but evidently it is still loading it. The laptop is Inspiron 7000.

Well, that didn't work, I deleted the config.sys file on my startup disk and it still comes up with the error message Cannot Flash when Memory Managers (e.g. HIMEM) are present.

I am using a startup disk which just boots up DOS.

I want to upgrade bios so that I can install win98SE in order to use wifi card with this computer, otherwise I would just leave it along since the old bios has been fine.

Any other ideas?

1. Delete the himem.sys file on the floppy.
2. If it still doesn't work, delete the config.sys file.
3. Look in the autoexec.bat file for a call to load himem.sys.
4. Unless you are many versions back, just load Windows up and see if it will work. You can always upgrade the BIOS after - your Windows load will still be the same and no different than if you'd done it first.

Which notebook?  Delete the config.sys file on the floppy, or better yet make a new bootable without the config.sys and add the BIOS software.

Once I disable the Himem.sys then I get an error message while trying to load new bios which says that FILE Close....got to be a easier way to upload this bios on Dell laptops, I've update my bios on my no name desktop with no trouble...not sure why this one is so difficult.

Anyone have any more ideas, I am reluctant to update the operating system prior to updating the bios. I will probably need the updated bios in order to get wifi card to work with this computer any way. If I can't get the bios updated then there probably won't be any need for me to update the operating system.

Here is the exact wording of the error PhoenixPhlash Error File Close failed on BIOS.ROM PRESS ANY KEY TO REBOOT This is with HIMEM disabled and booting for startup disk.

What notebook are you trying this on??  Have you tried downloading the floppy version, making the bootable floppy by running the downloaded executable, and then booting to that floppy?

Inspiron 7000 Yes, I created a floppy and booted up witht he floppy....it just gets the error message and will not finish.

If you downloaded from this page and used that file to create the floppy and then boot to that floppy and still get that error, I don't know.
