How to boot off a usb DVD drive?
A very simple question...
I have a Sony external DVD drive that is connected to my XPS M1530 via a usb 2.0 cable. How do I get the laptop to boot off the DVD in the drive?
Thx,
Marko

Check your bios settings to see if it allows you to boot from an USB device.

I've done that, but it seems to not recognize it and therefore skips booting off the usb device and directly boots off the hard drive.

You might have to set the USB as the first boot device in the bios. Also you can try the F12 option at the Dell splash screen

does it recognize it when you boot into windows? if it does see if your bios supports usb boot some do not my mothers laptop doesn't support usb boot but mine does because it is a year newer on both when you first turn them on there is an option to choose boot device by pushing one of the f keys don't remember which on but with the usb dvd drive pluged in press said button and see if it shows up as one of the choices if not your laptop probably does not support usb boot
