INSPIRON 5110 (no audio output when headphones plugged in)

Brand new 1 day old

3 types of headphones tried

sound is ok from speakers but when headphones plugged in then there is no sound, from doing sound tests, i.e. system beep tests etc, it appears from the icons that sound is happening but it is not coming out of the headphones. Take headphones out of jack and the system sounds are all ok .

Why are these things not checked before item shipped.?

Hi aed59blue,

I fully understand that you are frustrated with this issue.  Please be assured that I will look into this matter for you.

I suggest you to run MS Fix It to fix the issue: http://bit.ly/JvQScV

If the problem persists, I suggest you to enable Hidden Audio Devices and then check the audio. To enable the hidden audio devices please follow the steps from this link: http://bit.ly/1CY4mt

Please post the results for further help.

Hello. A Dell employee would probably tell you to update the BIOS and the audio driver. If I got one that didn't work right, I would restore it to the original factory configuration (page 72 of the N5110 Setup Guide) and immediately test it before going updating anything. If the problem remained after the restoration I would return the laptop as defective.

I have run both those that you suggested no fix. But I did notice that when I plug in the mic and audio headphones now .. that there is output to the laptop speakers.

Also you can appear to see that the test is being generated to the headphones but the sound is not coming out.

Same in that as soon as I plug in the mic the dell software idt pops up ...

Hi aed59blue,

It could be a problem with audio drivers, please try checking the functionality of the headphone and MIC in safe mode. To enter safe mode follow the below steps:

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Keep tapping F8 on the Dell Logo Screen.
  3. Once the computer enters Advanced Boot Option, select Safe Mode with Networking.
  4. Press Enter.

Check if the computer is doing the same thing in safe mode with networking.

If the problem still persists,

  1. Uninstall Audio Device driver and software in Device Manager (check box in uninstall windows) and restart the computer.
  2. Update the audio drivers, use the link below for the audio driver: http://tinyurl.com/cgcakw3
  3. Click on the link above, enter the service tag of the computer, select Audio, select download file and follow the onscreen instruction to complete the installations.

Try the above steps and reply for further help.
