Inspiron 14z n411z overheating and shutting off

I have a 4 year old 14z n411z laptop which seems to run hot

Yesterday the laptop started automaticall shutting down after being on  for  5 minutes.

The fan is turning on and attempting to cool it down but it still overheats

I let it cool down and the same auto shutdown occured after 5 minutes

Has anyone else had the problem and help me solve this problem?  Thanks for your help

First, verify that the fan is running (either by audio or by running the Dell diagnostics, F12 at powerup).  If it's not, it'll need to be replaced.

If the fan is running, and you've never done any maintenance, it's time to open the system up, clean up the heatsink (make sure they're free of dust) and replace the thermal pads that sit between the heatsink and CPU/GPU heat slug.
