Inspiron 15 3542 backlit keyboard

Hi All,

I bought my Inspiron 15 3542 back in November and would like to replace the existing keyboard with a backlit one. I think the part number is G7P48. My question is if the laptop didn't come with this feature, will this replacement work?

Thanks,
Nick

Hi Nick,

Dell Inspiron 15 3542 is shipped with only Chiclet style keyboard you will not find any compatible backlit keyboard for this system.

It might work -- that said, before buying, open the system and make sure the mainboard has the connector for the backlight power cable.  There are systems (some Latitudes for example) that ship without the power tap the backlight requires unless the system arrives with a backlit keyboard.

Thanks for the response. Would it be a separate connector that I would be looking for?

Ok I had a look and it appears the motherboard does have a port called KBLIT port. Now I just need to know if it is enabled or not.

Ravi,

I understand that you have to go with Dell's guidelines. I am happy to report however this is an incorrect statement. I do have the LED backlit keyboard in my 3542 and it works without any issues. The part number is G7P48. You will need to download the Dell Quickset utility and then type in Mobility Center. Click on the Keyboard Illumination button icon and you can set the keyboard LED to turn off within a certain timeframe of inactivity.

Hi Atulit,

Take a look at the above post for a link. All you need to really do is search Ebay for "3541/3542 keyboard"

Hi all

Being clueless about technology, does anyone know whether I could replace my refurbished Dell Inspiron 15 3542 I just have purchased (only a few months old so with a year's warranty) for a Dell keyboard that has slightly larger keys but still island keys.  I think from googling (pictures mainly) that some Dell Inspiron have the same keyboards with a number pad but slightly larger keys?

Best

Unfortunately, no -- the keyboard has to fit the openings in the palmrest -- which in turn fits only the models it ships with.

Hi

Thank you.  Do you think I would be able to get a separate Dell keyboard to plug in the laptop with larger keys?  Or are all keys standard and I am not aware in my ignorance?!

Best

try the wireless keyboard the Logitech K360. the keys are spaced a little wider, it has a number pad, and it is wireless which I find to be useful. the battery lasts a long time too.
