Inspiron 1501 memory limits

I have a Inspiron 1501 laptop on which I currently run Visa 32 bit. I'm wanting to upgrade to 64 bit Window's 7 when it comes out. The processor can handle 64 bit as its a AMD 64 X2. I do however wish to upgrade my memory. My largest concern is if the motherboard can handle more than 2 gigs (which is what I currently have installe). I'd like to move up to at least 4 gigs. Does anyone know if the motherboard will recognize that much memory?

The max memory for your system is 2 gigs.

Hi,

I helped my friend to upgrade to 2 GB + 1 GB = 3 GB. It does recognize 2 GB DDR2 SODIMM module in both slot. I checked the chipset spec, and it does support 2 GB SODIMM module. So Dell's spec is wrongly specified that it does not support 4 GB. Maybe they have a reason.

In theory, it support 4 GB (2 * 2 GB). Try it and keep the forum members updated

Even if you put 4GB into this computer it will not recognize all of its memory.

Hi WuShock11

Go to www.gtopala.com and download SIW system information of windows free for home use run it from the desktop on the left side go down to motherboard click it you will see the the 1501 will show Maximum memory Capacity is 4096 MBytes .

This tells me the 1501 can run 4 gigs so i took my 1501 to my local computer shop and they installed 2x2 gig sticks of Hyundai Electronics ram and my 1501 has ran this ram for close to a year now i run Vista Ultimate 64 bit on it and it runs just fine .

I do not think Dell tested the 1501 with 4 gigs so thats why the manual only shows 2 gigs max my guess on this tho !

Edit my BIOS is 2.6.3 that may be the key to 4 gigs .

Good Luck

Hi,

Finally I see someone installed 4 GB (2 * 2 GB) into Inspiron 1501. Thanks C3PO5 for the proof.

For those who keep saying Windows won't see 4 GB, please understand the memory address limitation.

32-bit operating system only can address upto 3 GB +.

If you use 64-bit operating systm, like Linux x86-64 (Fedora, SELinux, FreeBSD, Ubuntu), Win XP 64-bit, Win Vista 64-bit, Win 7 64-bit, Win 2000 64-bit, Win 2008 64-bit, Mac OS X, then all memory up to 16,384 PB (2^64 bytes) is visible.

No motherbord or chipset can handle so much in another 10 years

Hello All.

I have just installed a 2G stick on a Dell 1501 running XP 32-bit service pack 3. It reads and uses the memory just fine. I will be putting in a second 2G stick now that I know it works. I know with 2 x 2G I wont get exactly 4G, but with 2.512G installed I am getting 2.4G usable.

The Bios is the original, 1.7.0.

For those of you who insist it won't work because of Dell's posted specs.....SHUT UP! If you don't know what you are talking about or have no first hand experience with the issue then stop ruining others search for reliable info.

I can confirm it runs and recognizes 5gb of RAM (4+1 sticks) with XP 64 bit Pro Currently: waiting on second 4gb stick to arrive in the mail - to run 8gb of RAM.

neill808 - thanks for reviving this post.  I'm looking at going from 1+1 to 2+2, but now you have me thinking about 4+1!  I'm on bios 2.6.3, I believe, are you?  I haven't upgraded to a 64-bit OS, but if Vista 32-bit could use 4+1 as well as 2+2, I would give it a shot.

N_N: you need to run a 64bit OS to run that much RAM - Simply the 64bit OS runs more like a Server than a 32bit...

Sorry.
Well, I think I will stay with the 2+2 Gigs solution. It will surely be good for the next 2 years.
After that, I will buy a new laptop anyway. And that will have DDR3 slots, so I won't be able to use my old DDR2 rams, as it will slow down the DDR3-s as well.

Confirmed: 8gb of ram on inspiron 1501 1.6ghz AMD Tourion Duo 64bit with XP Pro 64

I couldn't justify the cost of upgrading to a 64-bit OS, so I just put 2+2 GB Hynix DDR2 PC2-6400 in, and Vista 32-bit Basic sees just 2.686 GB, less than .3 GB better than what BFunc got with 2.5 GB, but it works fine.  FWIW, an SSD is a better upgrade than memory, with only 1GB of memory and the SSD this thing is fast enough.  Kingston V100+ bundle.

I'm another user with 2 2GB 800 MHz memory sticks in the Inspiron 1501. I will keep my eyes open, and if more people are running 8GB, I may upgrade to that in the future. I'm running XP Pro SP3, and seeing 2.6 GB. I have Hynix and Micron RAM. My wife's Latitude D620 didn't like the Hynix, so I'm using both sticks of that in my 1501. Her D620 has 2 2GB 800 MHz module of Micron RAM.

I confirmed 4gb will work as well. I was thrown off when I visited this website:

www.ecotekmemory.com/.../certified-compatible-for-dell-inspiron-1501-ddr-2-pc2-4200-533mhz-200-pin.html

As it said that the inspiron 1501 only supports up to 2gb. I emailed them about what we have been talking about, and they actually confirmed that it does in fact take up to 8gb, and they will be updating their site shortly to reflect this.

I was going to order cus they had a great deal on 2 1gb at 24.99, but I am going to wait for them to have 2gb modules.

Can't wait to have 4gb in my inspiron 1501 with windows 7 64 bit. I should be flying!.

Thanks for all the info.
