Inspiron 15R N5110 with Windows 8 x64. Problems with Explorer.exe

Hello, this is my last hope to find a solution before I format my laptop. I tried everything:

The problem:

When I boot and get into the file explorer, the CPU usage jumps up to 33% and stays there even if I close it. Even more, when I try to close it, it freezes. If I restart the explorer.exe, it happens the same.

My attempts to solve it:

Safe mode, same problem; clean boot (with nothing else loading at start), same problem;  updated BIOS, still the same problem.

It has all drivers up to date; updated antivirus (M$ native antivirus); process explorer program only shows the explorer.exe as the problem

I ran out of ideas, any other idea would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hi danielgc,

I would recommend you to perform system diagnostics to ensure it is not an issue with the hardware. To launch diagnostics, press and hold “Fn” key while turning on the system. Hold it down until the diagnostic starts. For more information click the link mentioned below:

Please refer to the link mentioned below for information on error codes:

If the diagnostics pass with no error code, please provide the following details:

1. Operating system that came pre-installed on the system?
2. Have you done any hardware changes?
3. Since when are you facing this issue?

Thanks & Regards

Thx but I don't have google drive installed (If I had it, I had it disabled it when I was in the "clean boot" process).

I ran the diagnostics. All tests passed with no error code.

1. Original OS: Win7

2. I haven't done any hardware change

3. The problems began 2 weeks ago, I don't remember installing any program at that time.

In win7 everything was smooth.

try uninstalling  Google Drive and see if the error resolves, and then reinstall Google Drive.

Or open the C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Drive folder and rename the googledrivesync64.dll to googledrivesync64.old

if  CPU usage jumps up to 33% with constant rate ...it does mean hidden applications are running  behind the scene ...

try using selective start ...

step-1

a) Press the Windows + R key on the keyboard.

b) In the Run window type MSCONFIG and click OK.

c) On the General tab, click to select the option Selective startup, and then click to clear the option Load startup items check box.

d) On the Services tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all.

e) On the Start Up tab, click Open Task Manager. In the Task Manager window under startup tab, right click on each startup item which are enabled and select Disable.

f) Click OK, and then click Restart.

Step 2: Enable half of the services

a. Follow steps 1a and 1b to start the System Configuration utility.

b. Click the Services tab, and then click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box.

c. Click to select half of the check boxes in the Service list.

d. Click OK, and then click Restart.

Hi danielgc,

Please backup all important data and perform a clean installation of the operating system. You may refer to the link mentioned below to perform the installation:

NOTE: Re-installation of Windows will lead to data loss.
