Inspiron 1720, USB could run faster?

I installed XP on my Inspiron 1720. I installed the necessary drivers from the DELL driver page by selecting the model and make.

When I attach a USB flash drive I get a message that says: "

This device can perform faster. This USB device can perform faster if you connect it to a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port. For a list of available ports, click here."

So, I click there and it shows in bold (indicating the HI-SPEED ports) "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller" with 4 ports listed below, and one with 6 ports below that. There are no option for me to do anything in that window.

I have 5 physical places where I can plug the USB drive into, every one of them gives me the same message. Do I need a different driver? Any information is much appreciated.

Thanks

you may have missed the chipset driver or system driver. without those drivers all the USB ports will operate in 1.1mode instead of 2.0 mode.

Alright, so I uninstalled the Intel USB drivers... resulting in no USB present on my machine. The I reinstalled the Intel Chipset. Exact same result.

(apparently no hotlink images here...)

When I click on the bubble it lists a bunch of "Hi-speed ports" but no matter where I plug the thing in, it shows the same message.

Any suggestions?

remove any USB mouse & keyboard and any other peripherals from your USB ports and plug in only the high speed device.

Thanks, but I have never hooked up anything but high speed devices (external USB2 HD's).

I can transfer data at about 12MB/sec, so I am pretty sure they are functioning as USB2, right? It may be that I just get the pop up window that tells me they are USB1.

USB 2.0 is 480Mbits/sec which is about 30MB/s of achievable bandwidth. USB 1.1 is 12Mbits/sec which is about 1.5MB/s of real transfer speed. be sure not to confuse Mbits(mega bits) with MB (mega bytes) 1Mbit/s = 128 KB/s = .125MB/s So if you are seeing 12MB/s you are well over the 1.1 speed and must be running at 2.0
