Inspiron 17R SE (7720) - GT650M Graphics Card NOT WORKING

Dell have been working on a fix for several weeks/months for the issue where the Nvidia graphics card either vanishes completely or randomly disappears requiring a reboot to get it recognised by the system

Original post http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19498450.aspx?PageIndex=1

According to @dellcares the Product Team are actively working on a permanent solution - my direct conversations with @dellcares on twitter are now over two weeks long. There is still no guaranteed ETA on a remedy.

The list of people with this faulty laptop seems to be growing daily - probably because Dell are still selling it, knowing it has a major problem.

Please add your name to this post if you are the owner of this laptop or a similar laptop which is suffering with a vanishing Nvidia GT650M.

I am beyond mad about this situation.

I purchased a 17R and it worked great until 13 months after I bought it.  I voiced my concern and called them and they said they would not help me because the warranty had expired.

A few weeks later Dell technical support contacted me and told me that they would assist me.  So I began troubleshooting, replacing the BASE OS, getting disks and installing from them, etc etc.  No resolution, it still blue screens.

After 3 weeks of continual trouble shooting, they contact me today saying that they can't help me because warranty had expired.

If it was a user issue, had I done something to mess with the machine I can understand this.  But they knew these machines were bad and purposely did not fix them.  I don't want anything extraordinary, I just want my machine to work as it did.

Nobody should purchase a $1300 laptop and then expect it to go to the garbage heap in that short of a period of time.

Display drivers topped working --> sound is not working anymore, need to reboot.

Sometimes on wakeup I get a black screen --> cold restart needed...

Well mine got back once i updated the BIOS to A16. What so ever it is mainly visible when i`m on the charger not running on battery. They messed up this BIOS big time as i mainly get a blue screen then seeing the GPU missing like it was presented in the previous versions of it. They truly *** it up the whole thing along side the laptop it self. How ever even example for me i can`t see Nvidia 650M in device manager or Nvidia Experience , ince i start WOT /World Of Tanks/ it runs it. Cheap machine with cheap support what so ever. I do recommend anyone to buy ACER or other like HP but DELL or any other from them like ALIENWARE. Cheap *** with low support !

I ended up going to a previous Bios last night and my NVidia magically re-appeared also. I would not give my 17R SE up, I use it on a lap pad in my favorite chair 7 days a week. I put a Plextor SSD in mine 2 years ago with Windows 7 64bit and love it, it boots in about 8-10 seconds and has been a great powerhouse. I bought mine on the Dell Refurb site with a discount coupon and only paid $650 for it about 3 years ago. I have only had to replace the keyboard so far.

Well , my friend you should consider your self as a lucky person. I`ve bought SSD as well at the very beginning as well!

How ever i had to remove it as it not working anymore! Now the laptop has no sound only if it decides to give me some. I am truly disappointed in DELL and i will definitely advice anyone to buy from Toshiba or other none related vendor or people who created this piece of ***. Same vendors with similar setups like GPU and CPU scores and everything better then DELL and unfortunately this isn`t their first *** up. DELL should go out of business as anyone could build a better computer then them!

I have found out that the "Nvidia disappearing problem" is not necessarily related to the bios. I kept changing my bios back and forth to get it to return. My machine had some other issues so I decided to do a fresh reload using Windows 7 64bit, I have had no trouble for 2 weeks now! It was somehow related to something corrupted within the software side. My machine has been running great ever since. I used the latest drivers from the Dell site.

I just recently noticed this issue as well when I was trying to play an older, not exactly graphically-intense game on my Inspiron 17 and the video was slow and choppy.  It appears to only use the more limited Intel graphics card by default.  My device manager list shows a yellow alert flag on the Geforce GT 650M and states that "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)."  I've downloaded the latest drivers, but it doesn't seem to resolve the issue.  The Dell-provided BIOS update doesn't run because of some sort of error message, but some minor Googling has led me to believe that fiddling with that too much may not be worth the risk when the rest of my laptop is functioning fine.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve this and get the GeForce running again?  The other specs on this laptop look more than capable of running things much better, so I assume that it is the Intel graphics card that is the bottleneck, and that if I'm able to get the NVIDIA working, performance should improve?  It seems like quite a waste to theoretically have so much processor speed and performance capability and then be stuck in slow motion.

Any help would be much appreciated.  Thank you.

I have a similar problem. Upgraded to Win 10. I see both display adapters. My issue is (Upgrade ) the intel card is being used as the main display adapter instead of Nvidia. Both card have updated drivers and are seen by laptop but cant change to Nvidia as my main display adapter ?

Hi, friend. I have a few suggestion before you do anything else. Make sure you uninstall all DELL related drivers except the FN function one. Make sure you have at least A16 BIOS Uninstall all drivers and download Uniblue Driver Booster 3.0. They even have the free version but if you need a serial let me know. Make sure you have Microsoft 2008/2010/2012 framewrork installed and also direct x 9.0/10.0/11.0. Uninstall all driver liek i said even Nvidia along with Nvidia Experience. Then restart machine and go to Nvidia website download the need it stuff by choosing the auto identification method of install. Let Driver Booster do the job.

I got Dell Inspiron 17R turbo SE 7720 thinking that Dell is a good brand.

After 7 months of usage my graphic card disappeared all of a sudden.

Now after 1.5 years one of my RAM is not working.

This is one of the worst laptops of I have ever seen.

So many owners of the laptop posting the same problem about the graphic card and its a shame on the brand that they have not solved it yet.

Regards,

Shyam Sundar.

I found this old thread and the problems sound like mine, sort of. I have a 17r 7720 that doesn't even try to boot up. Phone conversation with Dell support and they said it had a bad screen. Replaced screen now nothing. Power light comes on and stays on. Lights in upper right corner cycle through a couple times then go out. Cooling fan does not cycle. No beeps or any other signs of life. Any ideas?

My friend and I and my wife all bought the 17R SE at the same time, mine and my wife's have been excellent. My friends acted like yours, he had an extended warranty, it was the motherboard, Dell gave him a newer laptop.

Still have the same problem. I've updated to the latest A17 Bios and installed clean drivers for Intel and Nvidia. Any ideas how to fix? TY.
