Inspiron 6000 CPU temp and fan question

Question

It's been bothering me for awhile, and I probably shouldn't have put it off for so long, but I noticed my Inspiron 6000 kicks the fan into high gear under relatively low stress situations. The weird part is that after I close down all running applications and let it chill out for awhile the fan will usually never kick off high, if it does it takes a few hours. I downloaded fangui3.1 and noticed my system runs a bit hotter than what some other people reported. It seems to idle at about 42C with a CPU speed at 600MHz. I think I keep a clean system from viruses, spyware and malware. What I'm worried about is that I'm using 3D Studio Max, Photoshop a music player and firefox together often which I'm sure demands most my system resources and kicks the temp up real high. I have all the urgent driver updates. Can someone offer some advice on how to manage my fan properly so that it shuts down when I am finished working and that it gets the right amount of cooling while I am? Also this is with no cooling pad. TBH I didn't even know they existed until I read it in someone elses post. Can anyone recommend one for an Inspiron 6000?

mine runs at 29-30C on idle. Have you cleaned the fan out with canned air?   vantec lapcool 2 is a good one.   http://www.xoxide.com/noco.html

boppo, a question about the canned air - can it be sprayed through all the vents, is the vent at the back best to get at the fan. Or is the only way of using it by stripping down the notebook?

A few months ago I opened up my laptop and cleaned all the dust out. I'll check again and see how it is. Does yours idle at that temp with the cooling pad Boppo? Ben

jec4312, What I have been doing with the system off.  I put a thin wire in the grill by the esc key so the fan will not spin when I blow the air in all the vents on the left of the system. I have used this computer for over 2 years 12-14 hours a day. I took it apart to see if there was any dust build up and there wasn't any.   ben, that temp is without a cool pad but it's also undervolted to cut down the temp.

Well all my vents were pretty clean so that isn't the problem. Maybe I've just used it too much. It's been on like 85% of the time since I've owned it which is about 2 years. I was wondering what is a dangerous temperature?

ben you might want to undervolt it and see if that will help. I have the info on that if you want it.

ben,  I don't know what cpu you have but I have a 1.86 and my undervolt are set to 1.084 volts on the high end and 0.716 volts on the low end.
