Inspiron 8600 Memory Upgrade
My existing memory is 2x256MB and I would like an addition of 512MB. Can I simply replace 1x256MB with a 512MB or do I need to buy the same size for each slot i.e. 2x512MB? Any slow down in memory access if I have 1x256MB + 1x512MB?

:^/ It's always best to go with matching pairs.
;^) As it happens, I'm upgrading my XPS M1210 to 2×2048MB, so I'll have 2×512MB modules left over once the new ones arrive in a couple of days, and will be looking to sell my old ones to anyone who can use them, such as yourself. I suspect that many folks in my situation will be similarly looking to help out folks in your situation. Check online trading sites such as e-Bay or Craig's List, etc. Perfectly good memory modules of the size you want should be dirt cheap these days.

no need to match the pairs the ram can be diff sizes. but ram is so cheap I would max it out. you'll see big diff in performance.
