They are both in the laptop -- it is a dual boot?

if you do not get any audio when you boot into 7, try removing the IDT audio driver entirely and reboot. Windows will install its own basic HD (high definition) driver which should produce audio. It you get no audio with the basic driver then take a look at the "No Audio FAQ".

There is no basic  HD audio driver in XP so you can only have audio if a manufacturer's driver is installed. The IDT driver is supposed to be compatible with 7, Vista, and XP, but in the past we have seen that some of the these multi operating system drivers only work with 7 and Vista so I would be suspicious of that driver in XP.

Hello.

> Plug in headphones to see if audio is getting to the headphone jack.

> Use Windows System Restore. (Type system restore into the Windows search box.) Select a restore point dated earlier than when the issue began

> Download and install a fresh copy of the audio driver from your model's support page

.
> If you continue to get the error code or cannot install the audio driver, run the audio tests in Dell 32-bit Diagnostics if your model has it (it is not on newer models). If you no longer have the 32-bit Diagnostics you might have to perform a system recovery in order to complete the diagnostic.

If you need more help please reply back with the full model name of your laptop and its operating system.
