Inspiron N7110 touchpad mouse intermittent failure
I have an Inspiron N7110 running Windows 7 Ultimate and I've been having problems with the touchpad mouse from day 1. It typically starts if I'm doing something that has a little more going on graphically than basic web browsing or email reading. For instance when playing solitaire the mouse will be working fine, and then after about 3 or 4 minutes it will stop moving with my finger. Usually it will either stop moving or if I'm moving my finger left to right for instance, the pointer will move left a little, jump back to the right, move left a little jump back to the right etc until I stop moving my finger across the touch pad. When this starts happening, if I right click or alt-tab out of the window then alt-tab back to whatever I was using the mouse will work fine for a little while. However the problem will persist and when I close down the application where the problem started the issue will continue.
I've updated the BIOS, ensured that the drivers are up to date etc, to no avail. Any help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated as this is a particularly annoying problem.

Hi Tuxedo1,
Welcome to the community.
In this case I’ll suggest to uninstall and reinstall the Touchpad drivers. You can uninstall the touchpad application from Control Panel-> Programs and Features.
You can get the updated driver from this link:

After you have downloaded the application, you can disable the options like touchcheck and scroll lock. Also you can stop the circular zoom and check if it helps.
If you still have the same issue then please create a new user account and check for the issue.
Let me know of the findings, Glad to be of assistance.

Could be worse... he could've said 'Have you tried turning it off and turning it back on again?'
This mouse issue is insane... it skips all over the place. Typing and suddenly my mouse is 5 lines up in mid-sentence of somewhere else and I have to fix it...

That I have a fix for. I installed Touchfreeze which deactivates the touchpad while your typing and that stopped the problem of the pointer jumping around while I write an email. You should be able to find it via Google.

Hi Tuxedo1,
Thank you for your response,
Please boot to the safe mode and check if you are experiencing any issue on the safe mode. Safe mode is a diagnostic mode of a computer operating system. These are the steps to boot to the safe mode:
1. You'll need to restart the computer and then tap the F8 key of your keyboard when you see the screen with the Dell logo.
2. This will take you to "Windows Advanced Startup Menu" which will have a option named "Safe Mode". Highlight it and press enter.
3. Then the computer will start in Safe mode, which is a special Windows mode used to diagnose certain computer issues. You'll need to login as an "Administrator". Then click on "Yes" in the box that'll appear.
Please use the system in safe mode and check for any failure.
Also the keyboard of the Inspiron™ N7110 / 17R system has a new "Disable Touchpad"
on the F3 key. You can enable/disable the touchpad using the F3/Fn+ F3 key.
Let me know of the findings, Glad to be of assistance.

I don't believe booting in safe mode is a valid test. The issue seems to occur when there is a graphics load on the machine so booting in safe mode isn't going to help.

Hi Tuxedo1,
Thank you for the information.
Have you tried to run the diagnostics on the touchpad using the Dell Support Centre application? Also is the issue occurring only on the graphics intensive application?
Please add me as friend and PM the service tag of the computer so that I can check detail about the system.
Let me know of the findings, Glad to be of assistance.

Hi everyone, I had the same problem my touchpad wasn't working at all, not event the buttons, but I disassemble my laptop and I found that the connection with the motherboard and the touchpad wasn't ok, so I disconnect the cable and put back and it started working again, it;s just weird because it seems that the laptop came with that cable not connected as it should.
