Keyboard Replacement Dell Inspiron 1545

I replaced the keyboard in my Dell Inspiron 1545 this evening. It's very very easy to replace a keyboard in your laptop.

So if anyone is having this issue and needs to replace their keyboard, you might find my short little blog helpful! :emotion-1:

I replaced the keyboard on my Dell Mini 10 today, and although my computer says its installed correctly, it does not work.  Is there some sort of software reset or driver that might be hanging up the new replacement keyboard?

Hi Carley914,

Please refer to the user manual and check if the keyboard is seated properly. http://bit.ly/1bH90l4. Please check for the connectors properly You might want to re-seat it and check.

Thank you for that link to download.  Wish I had that a long time ago.

I have carefully taken the keyboard on and off a few times.  I am not sure what is going on, but its the same problem with the new keyboard as I had with the old keyboard.  I feel it must be some sort of software issue as the problem remains and the device manager says its working, which it is not.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Carley914,

Try to boot into BIOS and see if the keyboard responds.

-Power off the computer.
-Restart the computer and start tapping 'F2' key on the Dell logo.
-This will take you to the BIOS screen.

If the keyboard in BIOS, then it might be a software issue. If it does, then it point towards a hardware issue. Most likely, the motherboard or the keyboard itself could be at fault.

I spent another hour with it tonight without any luck.  I didn't know exactly where to look, but I hit every tab and looked for a keyboard.  I didn't find one mentioned in the BIOS area.  The Device Manager still says its working correctly, which its not.

Thank you for your help with this issue..

Hi Carley914,

Were you able to access the BIOS page? If yes, then try using the right or left arrow keys to access the different tabs.

Awaiting your response.

I got there, but I could not find any mention of a keyboard in any of the tabs.  I finally just boxed it back up and put it in the closet.  I spent too many hours trying to fix it and I am currently too busy to mess with it right now.

Thank you again for your help.

Hi Carley914,

It seems to be a software issue since you were able to access the BIOS page. I understand your concern. Feel free to reach out whenever you have time. I would be happy to help you to troubleshoot the issue further.

Guys the fix is simple.... take a look at the ribbons on the old and new keyboards. You will see the ribbon schematic is different. They used 2 different MB on the model.
