Keyboard does not work when connected through KVM switch to Port Replicator
I have a D600 with D/Port Advanced Port Replicator and D-Family Monitor Stand. I'm using an IOGear kvm switch with USB connections. When connected directly to the laptop (no port replicator or monitor stand) the setup works great. When connected to the Port Replicator, the mouse works - but keyboard does not. I've loaded the latest NSS software download (dated 8-13-04) with no improvement. I'm operating on Windows 2000 v5.00.2195 SP4.
Any suggestions? Surely there must be a way to support kvm switch with port replicator ....

denamur,
Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
Does the keyboard work when it is directly attached? If so, then the hardware is working. I believe the problem may be with the compatibility of the KVM and the port replicator. You should contact IOGear to find out how to make the signal stronger between the keyboard and the port replicator when the KVM is in use.

The KVM works fine with my Toshiba Portege 2000 and it's port replicator. It also works fine when connected directly to the back of the D600. This seems to indicate that the problem is related to the Dell port replicator. I've loaded the new NSS, but it didn't seem to help (maybe created new problems --- read on). On the advice of another posting, I added a powered USB 2.0 hub - the KVM comes into the hub, and the hub is connected to the d/port. This has given mixed results. As long as you "wiggle" the mouse when returning to the D600 from time on the Toshiba it appears to work. If not, you must unplug the KVM connection from the USB hub and reconnect. Coincidentally, my D600 has become quite unstable today - graphic problems, lockups, etc. I remain very unsatisfied. It's especially revolting when I have experienced absolutely no troubles with the Toshiba setup - and that machine is several years older and has less memory.

Get a PS/2 KVM. They seem to work better. I have used a number of PS/2 KVMs with different dells and they all seem to work fine. The USB had different intermittent issues.
I have used the IOgear PS/2 KVM with my Dell D800 and it seems to work fine.

If you have not done so , you should also update your D600 BIOS and the touchpad software. Both have had new software released to fix some of the problems you are having.
The APR has had USB problems since day one and have yet to be fully fixed, so it is hit and miss with any USB device and the APR.
I am using the D600 and D-Port Replicator with 3 other PC's on a PS2 IO Mega KVM without problems. The only rare problem is if i let the D600 go to standby on return sometimes the PS2 mouse don't work. So i don't use standby. I am going to update the software and is if it fixes my standby problem also. I can get the mouse back by going into then out of hibrnation, or if i open the lid while docked and then close it the PS2 mouse comes back.
