Keyboard issue

Dell Inspiron 15 3000 series laptop about 2 yrs old running Win 10.

Problem just started today. When I type in Win password, it's reading it as double characters and as all caps (even though the caps lock is off).  So a  PW of (for example) "Bob123" is being read as "BBOOBB!!@@##". The "caps lock" warning below the password box is not on.  PC has been restarted several times. Is there a function key or something I hit which needs to be reset? Maybe I should consider adding a external keyboard.
