Keyboard not working, various symptoms

My Inspiron 8600 Laptop has begun to malfunction on me.  After the laptop has been on for awhile when I press any key on the keyboard they do not function.  A pop up box for a function I didn't request will come up.  Like a "insert hyperlink" box when in a word document instead of typing the letter 'f' when I press the 'f' key (or any key for that matter the same thing occurs).  When I am in a web browser connected to the internet a 'search for text" box comes up when pressing a keyboard key instead of typing the letter or number or the key pressed.  Also, if I try to open a new word document the message comes up that 'word has detected that you are holding down the control key. Do you want to start Word in safe mode?' and I am not holding down that key.  Some keys when I press them make a beeping noise although they do not type and other keys don't make that beeping noise when I press them (though they also do not type).  Any ideas what could be the problem? Or any steps I could take the remedy the situation.  This problem came out of nowhere without anything particular I can think might have caused the malfunction.

Also, when I restart the computer it sometimes works for a bit before going into this problem, but other times I can't even log in to my account.  I haven't downloaded any new software recently that would have caused this new problem either.

Thanks so much.

Sounds like the keyboard itself is malfunctioning.

I'd boot into the 32bit diagnostics and go into a custom test for the keyboard, where you can just type and it shows what letters you pushed on the screen, leave it there for a bit then see if it still does weird things like it did in windows. If so....replace keyboard. If not....then look at winodws, but find out first heh.

Thanks for the response.  When I put in the cd-rom to boot into the 32 bit diagnostics it asks whether I want to boot from the hard drive (press 1) or cd-rom drive (press 2).  And when I press 2 the computer does absolutely nothing.  Any advice??

it's lookin a lot more like hte keyboard has some issues.

You could try reseating the keyboard cable (check your manual for info) but i'd say it sounds a lot like you're gonna require a new keyboard.

you could probably use an external keyboard in the mean time if need be.
